Request to develop land
Goderich Township
Council met for its regular
meeting March 2.
T. Chuter was present to
request permission to
develop 3.5 acres of land for
rural residential uses. The
request was referred to the
Huron Planning Depart-
ment.
J. Te butt was present to
negotiate the sale of the
former land fill site. Council
filed the request until a site
inspection of the area.
Tenders were received for
erection of a sign at the
Township Hall and for
paving the nparkinag. lot. It
was moved by Councillor
Mcllwain and seconded by
Councillor Sturdy that Reg
Smith, Brian Mustard, and
Bob Smith be engaged to
erect a sign for to hall
Lavis Contracting was
voted to be engaged to pave
the parking lot and the
connecting road south of the
hall. • • . .
Thirty-nine applications
were received for the
position of road employee.
Council voted to file the
applications until March 9.
The clerk was instructed to
have a number of programs
printed for the community
centre opening on March 14,

and to proceed with the final
applications to Wintario and
the Ministry of Culture and
Recreation for community
centre grants.
Several accounts were
ordered paid, the largest
being to Lavis Contracting at
$13,355.
Start sewing
The third meeting of the
Holmesville II, 441 Club was
held on February 14 and
members started the
meeting by reading how to
construct and prepare
material for use.
The meeting was held at
the home of Mrs. Bev Van
Ninhuys and the girls made
dart samples, learned how to
press seams correctly and
same started working on
their garments. ,
The fourth meeting was
held on February 21 and the
members studied facing and
zippers.
The fifth meeting was held
on February 28 and mem-,

about hemming and noted
the techniques for their skit
about hems for Achievement
Day.
The leader Mrs. Bev Van
Ninnhuys held the sixth
meeting in her home on
March 7. The finishing
touches on vests including
trim, lining and topstitching
were studied and the group
learned how to apply bias
tape.
The next meeting will be
held at the home of leader
Liz Feltham on March 21.
Varna

A happy occasion took
place in Varna last Friday
night when 85 friends and
relatives joined with Elmer
and Norene Hayter at the
township hall to celebrate
their 40th .wedding anniver
sary.
Following a delicious din-
ner catered by Valma Miller
of Seaforth, an evening of
fun and reminiscing took
place, with an hilarious skit
presented by family
members and another by
their neighbours. (Picture a
couple of their sons back in
diapers and buggies).
Margaret (Gerald's wife)
was the narrator and music
by the children was in-
terspersed throughout the
program. Addresses were
read by Carol Simons on
behalf of the neighbours and
their son Allan for the fami-
ly. , •
An open house -was -held -at
their home on Sunday when
well over a hundred friends
called on them to extend con-
gratulations.
Jack Hunt, who was ad-
mitted to Clinton Hospital on
Monday, returned home on
Saturday afternoon.
Charles and Bernice Reid
arrived home Friday from a
very enjoyable vacation in
Hawaii, well -bronzed from
all that lovely warm sun-
shine. They were lucky
enough to land back in
Toronto when the city was
bathed in bright sunshine
too.
March is Red Cross month
and a canvass is beginning
shortly in Varna and sur-
rounding area under the
leadership of Mildred
McAsh. The Red Cross is
still very active in World
Relief and in our own coun-
try has many first-aid sta-
tions in isolated areas, trains
swimmers in life-saving
techniques and of course,
rucefielcl cares

village is expressed to the
family of the late Fred Bur-
dge,
urdge, a long-time resident of
the village.

dge of Owen Sound spent last
week in the village with Mr.

Victoria, B.C., visited on the
weekend with her grand-

'Scott. Janet is a member of
the Victoria University swim
team .which was.in. Toronto
last week participating in
the swim meet for Canadian
universities.

Day of Prayer
A very beautiful prayer
service on the theme "The
Earth is the Lord's" was
prepared by Amer-icaan In-
dian women for the World
Day of Prayer. A joint
Varna -Goshen service was
held in Varna on Thursday
evening, led by Doris Wilson
and Bonnie Roy. Margaret
McClymont offered prayer
and Margaret Hunt read the
scripture selections. Evelyn
McKinley read a translation
of Chief Seattle's impressive
speech, given in response to
the American government's
offer to buy their land. Carol
Simons gave a talk based on
James Johnston's Item,
"Creation". Joan McAsh
also took part. A duet was
sung by Joyce Dowson and
Marjorie Hayter._

The two UCW groups
separated. for their business
meetings. President Doris
Wilson announced that. the

Street Church in Clinton on
April 1 from 7-10 p.m. There
will be a meeting of the Var-
na group to set up a display
for it.
Enough stainless steel
knives and water glasses
will be purchased to bring
the supply to 100. A large
package of used stamps was
sent to the Leprosy Mission.
Members were reminded to
continue collecting them and
Marg Hayter will send them
in. Discarded pantyhose
should be saved for use in the
craft room of the Bluewater
Rest Home.
Treasurer Marg Hayter
reported that $374 was
realized from the pancake
supper, up considerably
from last year. The group
has been asked to cater for
Wat and Ruby Webster's
Wth wedding anniversary on
September 5. Tire annual
dessert euchre will 'be on
April 15 this year and the fall
turkey smorgasbord on
September 23.

St. James and taking part in
the service by reading were
Mrs. Margaret Middleton
and Mrs. Blanche Deeves.
Sarah Stacey also went for
the service.
Mrs. Crocker said she was
pleased to be invited as
speaker on such a beautiful
day in Bayfield. Her topic
was Creation which proved
to be very interesting. Molly
Cox played the organ and a
social time followed.
