Housing needs
Paul G. Dowling of the On-
iario-Community- _Housing_
Council and M.P.P. Jack
Riddell met with the Hensall
town council and the United
'Church Senior Citizen Hous-
ing Committee on February
19 to clarify the need for
Senior '- cozen • Hous"hila- li►
Hensall. •
According to the govern-
ment, only 10 such units are
needed and these needs can
be met in Exeter or Zurich,
but according to. a survey.
done by Irene Davis of the
Senior Citizen Housing Com-
mittee 23 people are present-
ly anxious to move into hous-
ing immediately. -
Jack Riddell pointed out
that all the MPP. members
on the housing committee
with him had urban.
backgrounds and did not
realize the , closeness of a
rural community like Hen-
sell,
ensell, where people have
spent all their lives and have
family and friends around
them. Moving to Exeter or
Zurich removes them from
all that life holds dear and
council and the committee
urged that a review of the
situation be undertaken to
change the statistical at-
titude of _ Queen's _Park to a
more humanitarian view.
Mr. Dowling promised that
such a review would take
place on his return to Toron-
to.
It was also decided to con-
tact surrounding
municipalities to see if a
survey had been done in
them regarding seniors mov-
ing ta Hensall when, and if,
senior citizen apartments
are available. Permission
would de asked to con -chid
such a survey in areas reply-
ing this had not been done.
Mr. Dowling will be con-
tacting Mr. Davis and the
council after his review and
consultation with Mr.
Fagan, the manager of the
Market Survey. If this is not
favourable, . it is proposed
that a deputation go to
Toronto after the election to
put their case before the
ministry of Housing.
