Mrs. Lee thanked outgoing president Florenc Cart- wright, secretary June Fothergill and treasurer Cathy .McDougall for their work in the past year. Lena Nesbitt demon- strated cake decorating for the group. Cathy McDougall brought a crib quilt that she, Brenda Radford and Audrey Thompson had made and is nowforsale. 1 �, Fifteen members and 12 visitors answered the roll call and it was noted that the World Day of Prayer will be held on March 8. It is hoped that someone from the Aimwell Unit will volunteer to participate. Two area students who have been competing in the public speaking contests at the schools, recited their Public sp'ae�g at Hullett Central On February 20, public speaking was held at the Hallett Central School. The students from Grades 4 to 6 competed in the junior division and the pupils from Grades 7 and 8 competed in the senior division. For the junior division, Dwight Caldwell, Lori Livermore, Lisa Bosman, Brenda Finch, Lisa Preszcator and Jane Anderson competed. The winners were: first, Lori Livermore, speaking on the making of MacDonald's; second, Lisa Bosman, speaking, on Helen Keller; third, Brenda Finch, speaking on Boat People. These three competed against three Blyth winners at the Blyth School. After the contest on February 25, Lisa Bosman placed first, with the two Blyth pupils placing second and third. The senior division par- ticipants were Cheryl Bromley, Julie Daer, Jeff McNairn, Susan Van Egmond, Lisa Duizer and _Brenda Nesbitt. The winners were: first, Brenda Nesbitt, speaking •on Terry Fox; second, Susan Van Egmond, speaking on superstitions; third, Jeff McNairn, Spbal ufg nthe history of the Parliament Buildings and fourth, Julie Daer, speaking about her dog. These . four competed against four Blyth pupils in the senior division at Blyth on February 25. Susie Walsh from Blyth was first. Brenda Nesbitt second and Julie Daer, third prize. .The winners received cheques according to their standing. The winners will also move on to Seaforth to compete against other winners. Congratulations. Hansel and Gretal On February 25, Kin- dergarten to Grade 3 went to the Clinton Public School for a puppet show. They saw Hansel and Gretal. They all enjoyed the plays. Special award Cheryl Radford, daughter of Mr.r and Mrs. Len Radford, -Londesboro, received the County of Grey Award dur- ing the Georgian College An- nual Awards Day Ceremony held .in Owen Sound on February 12. She is enrolled in the Creative Art II pro- gram •and is one of 158 Georgian students who received an award. She is a graduate of Central Huron Secondary School, Clinton. Tuesday Afternoon Ladies With 1251/2 points, Ramona's Pistachios -are on top and Rose's Roasted Nuts are second with 118. Beulah's Butternuts have 1171 points and Castle's Chestnuts are close behind with 117. Bonnle's Beer Nuts are close behind with 116, Bir- cham's Beechnuts have 110 points' and Ruby's Cashews are close behind with 109. Edgar's Almonds are in last place with 107 points. . Lois Gibbings had the high single of 283 and Gerry Mountford took the high triple of 686 and the high average of 205. Mixed League With 105 points, the Twilighters are on top and have a good lead over Bairdzee's Boys who are second wlth9l. The Fabulous Fives are 10 points behind with 81 and Spike Pleas Four have 77. Steve's Wonders are next with 69 points, the Head Pin Specialists have 65 points and the Grease Balls are close behind with 63. Wayne's Girls are at the bottom of the league with 60 points. In individual scoring, Linda Reinhart had the ladies' high single of 256 and the high triple of 678: Louise Glbbings bowled her way to the high average. For the men, Len Steep captured the high single with 302 and Bob Falconer had the high average and the high triple of 803. speeches. Brenda Nesbitt spoke about Terry Fox and Sandy Carter gave her speech on children raised by the wolves. Marion . Snell read the scripture' and Helen Lee gave a reading. After the meeting, a small auction was held consisting of Mrs. Lee's talents and lunch was served by Mrs. Snell, Mrs. Lee and Penny Overboe, with Brenda Nesbitt and Sandy Carter helping. The next meeting will be held on March 16. Bridal.hvwer On February 22, about 40 friends gathered at the home of Mrs. Dave Anderson for a bridal shower for Lloy Shaddick, March bride -elect. WI card party There were six tables in play at the WI card party on February 27. The winners were: ladies' high, June Fothergill; lone hands, Mildred McNall; ladies° low, Dorothy Daer; men's high, Len Caldwell; lone hands, John Pollard; men's low, Lorne Hunking. Genevieve Allen, Vi Burns and Dora Shob»rook were in charge of the evening and ,the next card partywill be held on March 13. Tuckersmith Mixed The league is in a tight. three way tie with Sid's Crowbars, Veenstra's Vicegrips . and Warren's Wrenches all wedged into" - First place with 110 points apiece. Broadfoot's Hammers have 105 points and John's Jacks are next with 100. Scottie's Screwdrivers are at the bottom of the league with 95. For the ladies, Anne Lenting had the high single of 265. Hilda Veenstra had the high triple of 659 and the high average went to Mary Buffinga with 184. For the men, Angus Hummel was the top bowler, taking the high single of 319, the high triple of 703 and the high average of 211. H.S. Over the winter months students from area schools have taken up a new sport, at the Vanastra Curling Club. The Grade 7 class from Hallett Central School spent two hours each Thursday,afternoon on the rink and some students proudly displayed their sweeping talents for the News - Record photographer. Dorothy, Airdrie is the runner-up for the high average with 186 and she also has the high triple with 733 for the league. Lena Nesbitt is the runner- up with 664 and Dorothy Airdrie has the high single with 323. Linda Renkema is the runner-up with 280 and she also is the most im- proved player and is up 22 points. In the team standings, Team 2 is leading the league with 94 points and they are McKillop 4-H'ers study machines by Mary Merner McKillop II, 4-H club held its second meeting at the home of the leader Darlene Eckel. President Mary Lou Anderson opened the meeting, then the secretary the minutes of the second meeting, followed by roll call. The girlsread in'their 441 books how to stay -stitch, how to sew a dart and how to gather. They also learned how to sew and finish darts and how to sew a plain seam Christine Preszc-atoa-read---and--how-to--use--pr-essing equipment. All made their own dart and the leaders showed how to press them and how to press a plain seam. • They had a quiz on press- ing material, then some of the girls pinned their pat- terns on their material and cut it out. -Sandy Merner the minutes of the first meeting. The girls voted to call their club the Sewin' Sews, then we read in our books about different parts of a sewing machine and we did a quiz on the parts of the machine. The third meeting opened with the secretary reading followed by Team 1 with 92 points. Team 4 is in third place with 77 points and Team 3 is in last place. WI meeting The WI cultural affairs meeting will be held on March 11 at 8 pm. There will be a motto and Lena Nesbitt will give a demonstration on cake decorating. Roll call will ask members to name something in life that is free and grand- mothers from the Blyth and Auburn Institutes will be the special guests. The last half of the members will hold a bake sale. The Londesboro WI are invited to the Blyth WI meeting on Thursday at 2 pm. Federation meeting On. March 11 at1pminthe Londesboro Hall, the Hullett Federation of Agriculture will hold their annual meeting. Officers for the next term will be elected and a discussion on placing yield signs on the township in- tersection will be an order of business. Also attempting to get a toll free from the Blyth exchange will be a major topic of discussion. Bring your neighbors and wives to this important meeting and let's have some lively discussion. Neighborly news Sympathy is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Pipe on the death of her brother Orville Hooper of Ailsa Craig on February 24. He was 70 years old. Mrs. Florence Cartwright is a patient in the Clinton hospital. Mr. and Mrs. George Hoggart, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Cunningham, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gibson and Clare Vin- cent went to Toronto on February 22 and attended the Good Roads Convention, returning home last Wed- nesday. Londesboro III. 4-H The Handy Hemmers 4-1 club held their fifth meeting at the home of Marjorie Duizer on February 23. The roll call was answered by 10 members and they discussed how to apply the waistband to the skirt. Mrs. Duizer demonstrated how to apply one to a skirt and Mrs. Bromley showed how to sew a hem. Lunch was served by Elizabeth Lawson and Lisa Duizer. 0 News d notes United news Gordon Shobbrook and Garnet Wright greeted the congregation at the Lon- desboro United Church on Sunday and the ushers were Darlene Hulley, Brenda Nesbitt, Sandy Merner and Kim Wright. A gospel sing began the service and Rev. Scott an- nounced' that the official board meeting will be held on March 9. The session will meet at 7 :,30 pm. A dance at 9:30 pin and a crokinole party at 8 pm will be held in the church hall on March 20 and tickets are available from Sunday School members. For the children, Rev. Scott showed an empty envelope and explained that if nothing is put in, nothing comes out. Ann Adams was the junior teacher. The Messengers met in the Sunday School rooms during the service. intplinreni meet At the 11th Explorer Expedition, Darlene Hulley and Lisa Bosman presented the Explorer emblem and Janet Wilts showed the picture. Mrs. Hulley handed out booklets about the World Day of Prayer. The girls received their stars " and made owls for crafts. • Shuffleboard match Last Wednesday evening, a shuffleboard match was held in the hall. The winners were: ladies' high, Genevieve Allen; ladies' low, Dora Shobbrook; men's high, Les Reid; men's low, George Hoggart; play-off high couple, Ila Cunningham and Tom Allen.
