Var Club
The first meeting of the
Varna 4-H Club was held on
Tuesday, February 3 at the
home of Kate Keys, and
Shelly thutea was ele-dcd
president; the phone girls
are Peggy Van Wonderen
and Laura Roy; and they
decided to have a floating
secretary.
All discussed the re-
quirements of the project
and determined their sewing
ability. Then each girl took
her body measurements and
determined her correct pat-
tern size.
The leaders showed some
different styles of vests and
some samples of interfacing,
and gave a quiz to test their
metric I.Q. The scores were
pretty good. The home ac-
tivity was to get a pattern
and fabric. by Lori Hayter.
The secs nd meeting was
on February 9 and the girls
decided to name the club
"Thrifty Threaders". Next
members figured out the
cost of their garments and
read the lesson looking at the
parts of the sewing machine.
I -1st of all, was pin fitting to
make sure the pattern fit. by
Jacqui Taylor.
(Correspondent's note:
Please try to get your report
to nie by Monday noon.)
The Stanley Township
Poker Rally on Saturday at-
tracted 56 entries.
Jean Taylor had the best
poker hand. Lillian Evans
was second and Danny Hor-
ton took third place..
Friday the 13th
proves lucky
for Bayfielder
By Milvena
Erickson
It all started out as a nor-
mal morning. Up at 6:45
a.m., into the bathroom,
washed and cleansed my
teeth, the normal morning
preparations for the day. I
went back into my bedroom
and made the bed, dressed
and put on my makeup, com-
bed my hair and called the
kids for school (7:20 a.m.)
I decided not to eat
breakfast to help keep down
those unwanted pounds that
I'd managed to lose over the
past few months. I had a cup
of coffee, black coffee, and
then a couple.more before ti-
dying up a bit. After donning
the snowriiobile. suit and
kissing the kids,,,goodbye,' I
left the house at 7:50 a.m.
and arrived at work at 8:00
a.m.
Customers started arriv-
ing at the Albion Hotel and I
served the coffee and cooked
breakfasts (bacon, eggs,
toast, jam and coffee - a real
bargain at $1.49). I made the
homemade soup (cream of
potato) and started steam-
ing the country sausage
which was to be the noon
hour luncheon special for the
day. Then it was time to chop
up the coleslaw and load up
the . dishwasher. About this
time the boss arrived,
Wayne Diemert, and men-
tioned the Wintario draw the
evening before and opened
the newspaper to check his
ticket numbers. He had won
a free book.
It was then I remembered
my son had picked up two
tickets for me at Brandon's
Pro Hardware in.ayrield
the night before. I retrieved
the tickets from my purse to
check the numbers. Sure
enough as I scanned the win-
ning numbers I thought I had
won $100. It was exciting!
Then my boss looked the
tickets over for me and ex-
claimed, "You've won
$5,000." I said, "Oh really",
and kept right on working.
They must have repeated it
about six times before I
finally realized' they were
telling the truth and not jok-
ing. I had in fact won $5,000. I
was so excited I hugged and
kissed everyone in the place.
I made it through my mor-
ning shift and went home at`2
p.m. I asked my son to go
and get another newspaper
so I could recheck the
numbers. I gave him a $1 bill
and said, "Oh what the heck,
keep the changer" Our
laughter rang out through
the house and has been a
favorite saying since Friday
the 13th.
My first thought after
realizing I'd won $5,000 was,
"Thanks be to God for help-
ing to make life a little easier
for me!"
And that's how a Wintario
winner in Bayfield
remembered her lucky day.
