Chiselhurst United Church, one of the
few remaining buildings in that crossroads
community, wan destroyed by fire Wed-
nesday morning, February 4, 1981.
Congregation members were unable to
save anything from the building. -
Thnfire ,was discovered by a neighbour,
Ruth Howard, who saw heavy, black
smoke pouring from the chimney when she
went for her mail. Within minutes, smoke
was pouring from the door and windows of
the brick church.
Firefighters from the Hensall and
Brucefield pumper truck responded to the
alarm. However,' little could be done to
save the church, which was completely
gutted: The varnished woodwork in the
church burned fiercely and there was
some concern both the Howard home and
nearby drive shed would catch as well.
The wall el the shed facing the church
was scorched by the -intense heat from the
burning church. -
Less than two hours after the fire was
discovered, the walls of the church had
collapsed.
Chiselhurst United Church, on Con.12-13
of Tuckersmith Township, is on the corner
dividing Huron and Perth counties.
Mary Kinsman, secretary -treasurer of
the church, said Chiselhurst United served
about 30 families. The church is part of the
Hensall United Church charge. While
. many of the congreagation were on the
scene, the only thing salvaged was a lawn
mower tn the church shed.
Miss Kinsman said the church,
. originally a wood frame structure, was
built in the 1860 period. In 1897, thechurdi
basement was added and the church
covered in with white brick. Chiselhurst
United was noted for its beautiful interior
woodwork.
The church, and the Howard home, are
the only remaining buildings to remind
passers-by that Chiselhurst, formerly
known as Latta's Corners, was once a
thriving community. At one time, the
crossroads community included a
blacksmith's shop , general store,
Presbyterian Church and several homes.
Rev. Stan MacDonald, minister of
Hensall United, also officiated at the
Chisellurst service. The minister is
currently on holidays.
Congregation members at the scene
suspected the oil furnace in the church
may have been responsible for the fire or
that leaking oil mayhave led to the fire
which destroyed the building.
