Remember White Ga n e Week
February 1-7, 1981 marks
the 35th anniversary of
White Cane Week, co-
sponsored bee The Canadian
National Institute for the
Blind and the Canadian
Council of the Blind.
i1 D. -Rempel, National
President of the (CCB, states
that, "Back in 1946 a small
group of blind people sug-
gested White Cane Week as a
means of telling Canadians
that the white cane canner is
blind."
"Since thein the week has
grown, involving Chill's 44
offices coast to coast and
some recreation dubs of
the blind themselves. As the
week gained strength, the
aims were broadened to
draw blind and sighted
Canadians closer together to
reflect the status of blind
persons in Canada, their pro-
blems and achievements and
to encourage people to pre-
vent blindnes," Rempel
said.
Each year a slogan is
devised to emphasize the
aims of the week. This year's
slogan is "Blindness Is
Everyone's Concern".
Nowadays we are all very
health conscious. - But who
thinks of blindness along
those lines? How many peo-
ple' know that this, year
possibly 3,200 Canadians
may lose their sight.
"The figure is , appalling
and could be greatly reduced
by the awareness of dangers
to vision and, preventive
measures, for example,
wearing safety glasses,"
Rempel said.
