Tuberculosis clinic
is planned hi St. Marys
Sr. MARYS - A tuberculosis
test clinic will be held in St. •
Marys for certain residents
following the discovery of an
active strain of TB in a local
resident.
Dr. Susan Tamblyn,
director of the Perth District
Health Unit, said that a list
of people suspected to have
bad close coaWct with the
patient is currently being
compiled so that they can be
notified to have tests taken.
Dr. Tamblyn made it
clear, however, that TB is
not generally very con-
tagious and is spread "only
with the closest coated."
While medical officials
declined to officially release
the name of the ,St_ Marys
woman who has contacted
the infection, The St. Marys
Journal -Argus was informed
that TB has been confirmed
in the case of Luong Bao

More accurate and immediate care is naw available to patients
at the Clinton Ptc Hospital The hospital has just finished
installing a new eoronary care monitoring system that tran-
smits statistics directly to Victoria Hospital hi Landon. Within
minutes head nurse Marianne Smith can receive directions
from Victoria from the patients' ECG read-out that has) been
sent. (Shelley McPhee photo)

The Clinton hospital is quiet, the patients
are resting.
The night ime sounds are disturbed as an
alarm rings in the first floor nurse's
There's no touching me now. I've
found a .quiet little haven that will
shelter me through the January blahs,
the financial blues and a general state
of out-and-out depression.
Ah, wouldn't you love to know my
secret. Maybe you'd even pay me
hundreds of dollars for the information
(not that I give a hoot about money in
my refuge, but a buttery dish of
escargots would sure beat those endless
- peanut but ersandwiches).
Food is really a minor concern when I
slip into my quiet shelter. The worries
of my world are quickly forgotten and it
takes an incredible amount of stamina
and willpower to come out and face
another 9 to 5 day of reality.
But when evening sets in and I am
free of my tedious responsibilities, I
prepare for my moment of solitude.
With my Christmas flannels keeping
my body toasty warm and a treasured
glass of vintage Mead doing equal
justice to my fragile spirit, I slip away
into a marvellous world of beauty,
romance and adventure.
And ail for $2.95!
Yes, I have found the secret for
rejuvenation in nothing more than a
good, thick, torcey noveL
I 'escape to a lush, warm Caribbean
sorld where a beautiful young heiress
fights to control her womanly desires
for a rugged, dynamic slave on her
father's plantation.
The story of Shauna Trahern and
Ruark Beauchamp (I love the names)
is not realistic, but that makes it great.
In those pages I encounter few
similarities between Shanna and
.myself, in fact none so far.
I don't have to deal with awesome
beauty and a wave of shimmering
golden tresses. I'm not able relate with
shelley
msphee
the problems she faces with Ruark, who
she actually married in England in a
devious plan to convince her father that
she had a high class husband who could
bear her a sun and inherit the Trahern
plantation, when actually Ruark was
bound for the hangman's noose, and
Shauna knew this and planned to tell
her father that her new husband died an
a tragic accident, and then she would
get off, free from the drudgeries of
marriage, but now she lives in constant
fear because the Trahern bondsman
unknowingly saved Ruark from death
when he shipped him to the Caribbean
island with other lost souls and
criminals to labor in the sugar cane
fields.... _
Gasp!
Yes I mustadmit, Shanna and I live
slightly different lives, and besides I
have short brown hair.
But that's the great thing about this
book, I don't have to be reminded of the
everyday problems I face; the
miserable weather outside or the un-
stable world I live in
Instead, my haven offers a very
wealthy family, a beautifully gowned
giri who spends her days strolling
amongst azalias, riding her steed
through the warm, blue surf and whose
biggest concern is whether her waist is
tied in tight enough and whether her
low cut gown will slyly tantalize her
secretly wedded husband.
Sure it's ridiculous, over -written and
incredibly soapy, but it sure beats the
heck out of looking at a depleted bank
book or trying to get the car battery to
turn over on these frigid mornings.
I'll take a good trashy novel anyday.
and besides for $2.95, you can't
wrong.

374 MAIN ST., SOUTH
station. With precise, well trained actions,
the on -duty nurse makes a quick check and
finds that an intensive -care unit patient is
suffering from an irregular heart beat.
Within seconds the nurse takes position
in front of a transmitter and monitor and
calls into the microphone, "Victoria
Hospital, this is Clinton hospital calling."
With the call 'acknowledged; the Clinton
hospital -nurse sends an electrocardiogram
(ECG) strip through the monitor. It is
instantly received some 65 miles away by
the intensive care unit doctor at Victoria
Hospital in London. He studies the ECG
read-out of the Clinton patient and sends
the proper instructions for care until the
patient's doctor arrives.
The nurse is using some of the most up-
to-date coronary care equipment
available. Recently purchased by the
Clinton Public Hospital, the system offers
patients accurate, instant and expert ca4•e
from one of the most advanced hospitals in
Ontario. t
Costing over $47,090, the system gives
immediate information until the Clinton
hospital specialist, Dr. Raymond flowers.
is able to get to the patient_
The Clinton hospital is not large enough
and does not have the need for a 24 hour
specialist, like Dr. Flowers, so the
coronary care system 'provides help until
he is summoned.
"The first few minutes are important in
a thing like this," Doug Coventry, the
Clinton hospital administrator explained.
He added, "Dr_ Flowers is probably as
good as you can get, but he's not here 24
hours a day."
Like many small hospitals across the
province, including . Wingham and Kin-
cardine, the link -up is directed to Victoria
Hospital's special care unit under the
direction of Dr. Bill Sibbald. There, a
doctor is available around the dock and
can give help and directions through the
communication system when needed.
Although Clinton hasn't had too much
experience with the new coronary care
system, Mr. Coventry forsees a greater
ability for the local hospital to treat
coronary patients, rather than send them
to a London hospital.
Clinton's new monitor is connected to the
hospital's intensive care four bed station.
It includes three bedside monitors to read
the patient's statistics, a receiver and
transmitter.
Unlike the' old system, which Mr.
Coventry says is now obsolete, the new
equipment measures the patient's pulse,
respirations and temperature, as well as
gives the ECG read-out.
While the old system could only monitor
the patient in bed, the new equipment
allows the patient to walk through a
portion of the hospital, wired to transmit
the information, and Victoria Hospital can
read the statistics while the patient is
moving around.
Within the next two weeks, the old
equipment will have been replaced and -the
new system will be in full operation. Most
staff members at the Clinton hospital have
cardiac training so they can operate the
new monitors, and are pleased to have
such modern equipment.
