Varna UCW honor member By Mary Chessell A Life, Membership in .the United Church Women and a brass jardiniere were presented to Eleanor McAsh • at the January meeting of Varna UCW in recognition of her devoted service over the years, and especially during the past two years as presi- dent: A great deal was ac- complished under her leadership. The new president, Doris Wilson, opened the meeting with some New Year thoughts. Devotions for the beginning of a new year were given by the committee of Maurin Hayter, Ruby Hill and Mildred McAsh. There was a contest on our knowledge of people in the Bible, then each member was asked to state her New Year's resolution: This brought out some in- teresting thoughts and some hearty laughter, especially when one member who gets to her pew at the Moment the minister gets to the pulpit most Sundays resolved to get to church on time this year. Eleanor McAsh and Ber- nice Reid volunteered to at- tend the Huron -Perth annual meeting of • the UCW at Brucefield on January 26. Bonnie Roy and Mary Chessell were appointed to see about getting a replace- ment stove for the church kitchen. -The pancake supper Is planned for March 3. Custodian of the church, Mildred McA.4h, will receive a raise of $5 a month. The meeting ended with prayer and a social half- hour. When Beth Rathwell arriv- ed home from the west at New Year's, she brought with her a clipping from the December 24th issue of The Calgary .Herald concerning the resettling of the Colitis family in their new home after the fire. It goes to show that good news does get on the wire service and it does get printed in daily newspapers, too. The Orange Lodge's benefit card party had only an average attendance last Friday, probably because of the poor driving conditions, but $117 was raised. Ladies' high and low euchre prizes went to Sharon Chuter and Mildred McAsh. Frank Thompson won the men's high, Wilfred Chuter was low. Draw winners were W.D. Wilson, Bruce McClinchey, Brent Taylor, Krista McAsh and Jean Reid. There will be another card party on the 23rd. Helpful hint When milk turns sour p pancakes on the menu.
