In an interview with Walt McKechnie last month, the
NHL veteran sounded unsure of his future in the NHL.
He joked that next season he may end up flippin'
burgers at Rick and Willie's in Bayfield. For the time
being, Walt McKechnie's future with the Detroit Red
Wings appears to be on solid ground. •
Last week the Red Wings released four players from
their line uj) including veteran forwards Reg ,tie Leach
and Tom Rowe, goaltender Gilles Gilbert and former
all-star defencemen Jim Schoenfeld.
The news isn't surprising since Walt informed me
that Detroit was planning a major personnel shakeup.
He wasn't kidding.
Two days prior to the release of the four players, the
Red Wings traded defencemen Willie Huber and for-
wards Mike Blaisdell and Mark Osbourne to the New
York Rangers for forwards Ron Duguay, Eddie
Johnstone and goalie Eddie Mio.

Are those Blue Jays for real? It's hard to argue with
statistics. For the first time in their history, the Jays
are eight games above .500 and are presently battling
the Baltimore Orioles for first place in the American
League Eastern Division.
Pitching is the major reason for the Blue Jays'
success thus far. Dave Stieb has been a tower of power
on the mound, with a 10-4 record and a 2.18 ERA.
Starters Jim Clancy, Luis Leal and Jim Gott are all
having respectable seasons with .500 records.
The Blue Jay relief crew may be a weak spot on the
squad, although Roy Lee Jackson has a 5-1 record with
two saves. Joey McLaughlin has a 1-2 record with six
saves. These men may decide just how far the Blue
Jays go this season. A team must have a reliever that
is capable of putting out opposition rallies if they hope
to become a winner. The Cardinals have Bruce Sutter,
the Phillies have Tug McGraw and the Brewers have
Rollie Fingers. Relievers are the key to success.
Offensively, Lloyd Moseby is quickly growing out of
last year's rookie status, batting a crisp .291 with 30
RBI's. His confidence at the plate has earned him the
respect of opposition pitchers and Blue Jay fans. The
Jays will have to get continued RBI production out of
this kid in order to take a division pennant.
The split catching system of the Blue Jays appears to
be paying off nicely. Veteran Buck Martinez and Ernie
Whitt have performed well at the plate combining for
42 RBI's. Martinez is batting .306 and has an on base
percentage of .371. Whitt is batting .259 with seven
home runs.
Designated hitter Cliff Johnston has had a produc-
tive season at the plate, slugging 12 home runs and has
32 RBI's. Jorge Orta is coming off the injury list and
the Jays' are hoping he will come into form as the other
designated hitter.
Another reason for the Jays' success is the fine play
of first baseman Willie Upshaw. Upshaw is batting .306
with 37 RBI's to his credit.
The Jays' have the ingredients of a strong team.
Although this year may not be the year for champagne,
the future looks good. They may be a player away from
being serious World Series contenders.
Five wins in seven starts

If you were at the Chnton
Flemings -Colts home game
on June 17 and left after the
second inning, you probably
missed one of the best
comebacks of the season.
The Colts ran into error
problems and were down 7-0
after two innings only to
come back in dramatic
fashion to beat the London
Juniors 11-10.
The game couldn't be
deemed a classic as each
team made costly fielding
errors, five to the Fleming -
Colts and four to London.
Clinton belted out a season
high 13 hits in picking up
their fourth win in five
starts.
London, started the game
like a house on fire,
collecting five runs off
starter Dave Patterson. A
two -run homer to right field
by Darwin Barker was the
major thorn in the Fleming -
Colts' side.
Don MacDonald replaced
Patterson on the mound to
start the second inning and
after hitting and walking the
first two batters, MacDonald
was greeted by Barker's
two -run double.
Following Barker's fourth
RBI, things were tense in the
Fleming -Colts' dugout,
prompting Coach Brian
Kennedy to say "we're going
from the flying pan into the
fire."
Clinton hit the scoreboard
in the third inning as John
Hart scored after reaching
base on a . fielder's choice.
Hart advanced to second on
a passed ball and scored on
Doh MacDonald's single. Cal
Fremlin followed with an
infield single to set the stage
for Greg Burns. Burns
slashed a sharp single to left
field to score MacDonald and
give the Fleming -Colts their
second run.
Clinton's offense ignited in
the fourth, scoring three
runs to close the gap.
Dave Patterson led off the
inning with a walk. Catcher
Butch Fleet then followed
with a hot shot that the
London third baseman
bobbled and then threw
away for an error. John Hart
then singled to drive home
Patterson. Mike Chisholm
followed Hart with a single to
drive in Fleet, cutting
London's lead to 7-4. Don
MacDonald cont uwed his
strong play at the plate by
driving in his second run
with an infield single to score
Hart.
The London Juniors scored
a big run in the fifth inning as
the Clinton outfield miscued
on a high fly ball hit by Dave
Blake. The ball fell between
the Clinton outfielders, who
apparently lost it in the sky,
allowing Blake to advance to
second. Paul Creighton then
drilled a single to centre field
driving home his team mate.
Both teams slowed down
the pace for the next inning
and a half until the bottom of
the seventh when the
Fleming -Colts took the lead
scoring five runs.
Hans Leppington led off
the inning with a walk. Dave
Patterson was next up and
he greeted Brian Collar's 2-1
pitch with a swing that took
the ball high over the right
field fence. Patterson's two -
run blast took Collar out of
the game and he was
replaced with Scott Stafford.
Stafford got Fleet to fly out
but ran into control
problems, walking the next
two batters he faced. Don
MacDonald followed the
walks with a single through
the pitcher's legs, scoring
another run to make it 8-8. A
passed ball advanced
MacDonald to second base.
Cal Fremlin then ripped a
single to left field scoring the
go ahead runs.
London fought back with
two runs in the eighth inning,
deadlocking the game at 10-
10.
Some smart base running
by Ron Wells gave Clinton
the victory in the bottom of
the ninth inning.
Wells reached base by
slapping a single to left field.
Danny Colquhoun then
executed a perfect bunt to
advance Wells to third. The
throw to first to get
Colquhoun, sailed past the
first basemen and Wells took
off past second and was

Colts in pitching eight in-
nings of stellar relief.
MacDonald allowed only
three earned runs and helped
his team's offensive cause
with four singles.
John Hart drilled three
singles for the Fleming -
Colts.
London hurler Brian
Collar took the loss, allowing
nine hits and giving up six
earned runs.
On Sunday, Clinton
travelled to Exeter for a
double header against the
Juniors.
In the first game, the
Fleming -Colts wound up on
the short end of a 5-4 score
but rebounded in the second
game for a 5-2 victory.
In game one Clinton held a
3-2 lead after five innings of
play but an error -filled sixth
inning gave Exeter the lead.
icit t0
In the sixth, Exeter
collected two hits and
capitalized on one error and
two wild pitches to take a 5-3
lead.
In the seventh and final
inning, the Colts could only
score once with their drive
falling two runs short.
Scott MacDonald pitched
five strong innings for the
Fleming -Colts but ran into
trouble in the sixth inning to
take the loss.
With a little coaching and
practice, MacDonald should
be an asset to the Clinton
On June 17, the Clinton Fleming -Colts rebounded from a seven run deficit to defeat the
London Juniors 11-10. Pictured is Clinton starter Dave Patterson who was hit for five
runs in the first inning. Although Patterson was pulled from the mound in the second
inning, he returned in the outfield and later bashed a two run homer. (Rod Hilts photo
Midgets edge Seaforth
Although the Clinton
Midget baseball team saw
its unbeaten streak end, they
extended their record to 5-1
in the young season. After
losing to a hard-hitting
Listowel team, Clinton edg-
ed Seaforth and Dashwood.
The team travelled to
Listowel on June 15 where
they suffered their fit st set-
back. The inability to
establish any offense limited
the midgets to one run on
just three hits. Randy Keyes
lost his first game although
his pitching was very respec-
table.
Randy struck out nine bat-
ters but gave up two long
home runs.
The final score was 7-1 for
Listowel as they pulled away
in the final innings by scor-
ing five times.
On June 18, Clinton scored
twice in the final inning to
end a tense struggle against
Seaforth. The exciting game
had the lead change hands
several times before Clinton
claimed th 12-11 victory
Clinton took an early 'eau
with Kevin Lee's three run,
inside the park home run.
The midgets came to bat in
the sixth inning down by four
runs after Seaforth had
scored six times in the same
inning.
Wayne Smith and Kevin
Lee doubled and drove two
runs each to tie the game at
10-10.
Seaforth went ahead 11-10
with one run in the last inn-
ing, leaving the home team
with the difficult task of
scoring twice.
Randy Keyes doubled in
one run to tie the game. With
one out Calvin Kerr doubled
to leftLfii?1d to score Randy
and conclude the game.
Randy won his third game
in relief of Calvin Kerr.
Kevin Lee was the top batter
with three hits and six RBI's.
