A short information paper put out by the lab of the
Clanton Public Hospital says, "A laboratory is just one of
the many major cogs in a wheel that aids m helping a
patient to know whether he is sick or well."
This is a rather modest description of a very important
department. For so many patients, the lab plays a vital
role in their treatment. At the lab, a large variety of tests
can be performed, on blood, urine, joint fluids or tissues,
to determine what is wrong with the patient.
The lab technologists are in effect the "detectives" of
the hospital; they are professionals who work with ad-
vanced technology and big words: hematology,
biochemistry, histotechnolo; , cytology, ianmaanoly.
The lab in the Clinton hospital is taking a more active
role in the hospital. Lab technologist Carol Dixon says
that only eight years ago the Clinton lab did very few tests
on its own, namely partial blood counts and elec-
trocardiograms.
Now she says they do "quite a battery of tests," in-
cluding all routine hematology (blood) and chemistry
tests. Blood tests help detect diseases such as leukemia or
anemia, and infections like appendicitis. Chemistry tests
are urine or fluid tests, and can help detect diabetes, or
kidney, liver or heart disorders. Urinalysis can also detect
pregnancy.
Other kinds of lab tests can detect bacterial and viral
diseases, and cancer. One of the newer lab tests which
started last September in Clinton is in the field of

cytology. The test consists of a sperm count.

heart patients. This is being done under the supervision of
Dr. Flowers.
Dixon says a major advancement for the Clinton lab
was the acquisition of a Gilfford 202 machine, which the
hospital's ladies' auxiliary bought two years ago. This
machine helped automate manual procedures which used
to take a lot of lune. Instead of boiling samples, now the
technologists can get test results very shortly using the
machine which is connected to a computer.
Now only specialized tests are referred to the Stratford
hospital.
There are three technologists and two assistants who
work in the lab. The lab director, Dr. Treloar, come from
Stratford, because by law a pathologist is required to head
a laboratory.
The Clinton lab has also benefited from the new addition
to the hospital. One room of the new wing belongs to the
lab, giving the technologists more space to do their tests,
s. cifically blood tests and ECGs.
Dixon says they can offer more efficient services to the
patients because they are not so crowded as they were
when they took blood samples in the same room where
they analyzed them.
The lab testing room is also now in the same area as all
the important services for outpatients: admitting, X-ray,
physical therapy and lab testing. She says the new wing
has really helped to benefit outpatients.
