The additional support
posts required on the main
floor of the Huron County
Pioneer Museum have been
prod in place and 20,:
square feet of museum is
now open.
Havingundergone months
of debate and currently
under study by the feasibility
study team made up of
Huron County residents, the
museum along with the log
cabin has been open since
late last month.
Costs for the repairs
enabling the main floor of
the museum to be opened
this summer were originally
estimated at $500 but were
kept to a minimum at less
than $350. Timber posts cut
from the Bannochburn area
with the help of Katirnavik
students and museum staff
have been bolted in place on
the lower floor area to
provide additional support.
B.M. Ross and Associates
Limited, a Goderich
engineering firrn, have in-
spected the repairs and
museum curator Raymond
Scotchmer said the main
floor area now meets
museum building code
standards.
Mr- Scotchmer indicated
a full complement of
demonstrations, including
candle and ropemaking, will
take place throughout the
summer season. He does
need some help though.
"We ne' ,i people on a
volunteer basis," stated Mr.
Scotchmer.
In past summers the
museum has been able to
take advantage of summer
student employment
programs but because of the
uncertainty surrounding the
museum at the beginning of
the year, it was not possible
to apply for such a program.
There are lots of jobs to be
done for any volunteer
coming forward. Such tasks
as giving demonstriations,
moving artifacts, resear-
ching, acting as a floor guide
and even cutting wood need
to be done.
Most of the artifacts
currently on the top floor of
the museum will remain
there although some
juggling will take plate. The
curator plans to move a
couple of the larger vehicles
from the main floor out to the
G.rierich airport a:.:i from
the upper floor, bring down,
at least the car used by the
museum founder H.G.
O'Neil.
The price of admission to
the museum is $1:.50 for
adults, $1 for students and
senior citizens and 50 cents
for school children. Also for
museum or marine buffs the
Marine museum o , ns May
21 and the admission price is
$1 for adults and 50 cents for
children.
The main floor of the
Huron County Pioneer
Museum will remain open
until the end of October.
Champion
lays off 80
GOOERICH - Some 80
employees will be issued
temporary lay-off notices
from Champion Road
Machinery Ltd.
Workers in the finished
products area of the com-
pany's Gearco facility will
be out of work from May 24
to May 27 inclusive.
Company spokesman Bill
Metcalfe said the lay-off is a
result of a shortage of or-
ders. "We do not have
enough orders to continue
full production," he ex-
plained.
More off-street
parking
MITCHELL. - As a result of
council's discussion on the
motion to amend the zoning
bylaw, to allow Faust
Brothers Hardware to ex-
pand its store on May 16,
another serious decision
came into play.
When discussion led to
more off-street parking in
the downtown area, Coun-
cillor Alec Ellens was
concerned that a number of
cars are using Mitchell
parking spaces all day as a
depot, while they commute
to Stratford to work. Two
spots sited were the public
lot behind the library. and
the bank parking lots.
Councillor Ellens asked
clerk -treasurer to go after
the Ministry of Tran-
sportation and Com-
munications regarding an
area for commuter parking
Don Eplett said the MTC has
no jurisdiction within the
town. but did have outside
town limits. It would be up to
the ministry to deride on
where such an area could go.
