Epics
Clinton was represented at
the AWANA OLYMPIC
Games in Stratford on April
21. Two teams from the local
Awana Club participated fan
this sporting event and both
teams placed third in their
visions.
These Olympic games are
inter -club events happening
all across Canada and the
United States. The first
Olympic Meet for Awana
club was held in Chicago in
1955. Since that time these
games have grown in
nwiber and popularity. The
Clinton club has competed in
the local meet for three
years. The 1983 girls team in-
cluded Heather Brownridge,
Shelly Bonte-Gelok, Tammi
Spence, Tammy Dupee,
Terri Evans, Jaqua Lobb,
Erica Crane, Julie Cook,
Julie Davison, Megan
Hodgins, Julia deJong,
Sharon Hollinshead, Wendy
Johnston, Cheri Watt,
Angela McCool and Karli
Manchus.
Boys team
The Boys 'Ream members
were 'Jamie Cook, Shane
Hollinshead, Ron Cook, Ed
Bezzo, Danny Dupee, Steve
Poirier, Jamie Poirier, Mat-
thew Langendoen, Dwayne
Strong and Jeff Thomson.
Congratulations to both
teams!
Spirits were high and ex-
citement filled the air as
team members left from the
Fellowship Bible Chapel in
Clinton for Stratford.
If you were on the road to
Stratford that day, perhaps
you noticed the group or
heard the voices. There's
something about a bus ride
that inspires kids to sing.
Several songs and choruses
later they arrived in Strat-
ford, and the cheers and
songs continued. However,
as they turned into the park-
ing lot of the Northwestern
High School and saw so
many other buses and peo-
ple, a hush descended on the
crowd.
In the dressing rooms old
friends were recognized and
greeted, then laughingly
warned to watch out for Clin-
ton on the game floor. Most
of the trembling and giggling
came out in the change room
and squaring their shoulders
the Clinton team members
climbed into the spectator
stands to wait in a group.
They were early for the meet
and had time to watch the
end of the "Spark-a-rama".
This is an Olympic meet for
Awana Sparks club
members in Kindergarten to
Grade 2.
At Awana Olympics the
gymnasium floor is marked
with tape into halves, each
with a giant circle marked
on. These circles are
quartered with diagonal
lines and all the events and
races take place on or
around the circle. Four
teams compete together at
one time. Boys teams com-
pete against boys and con-
versely girls against girls.
Coaches
in charge
The Clinton teams were
lined up along the yellow
team line. Opposite, across
the circle were the blue
teams from Willowdale
Church in Guelph. The club
teams from Guelph Bible
Chapel in red were on the left
and to the right were the
green teams from Stratford.
Behind was another full
circle with four girls teams
and four boys teams seated
around it. Altogether there
were approximately 220 peo-
ple directly involved in the
games on the gymnasium
floor at the same time. Each
circle had a circle director,
four line judges and eight
team coaches in charge of
order.
Andrew Barker, the
Awana missionary from
London, welcomed everyone
and outlined the afternoon's
events.
Fifteen girls from each
team lined up for the Bean
Bag Relay. Tensely they
waited, poised to catch the
bag and return it quickly.
With a sharp bang from the
starter's pistol, the Olympic
games were underway.
Event followed event
quickly. The girls would
o mplete the heats of each
game or race, then the boys
would run off the same con-
test.. Every effort was ac-
companied by cheers and
shouted urging from teams
and spectators.
After six events were com-
pleted a half time break was
called and the Clinton group
filed outside to chatter ex-
citedly, munch grapes and
encourage each other. Soon
it was time to return to the
