Pointers on panelling a roo
Installing your own
decorative plywood panell-
ing, and completely
transforming a ruuiii is a du -
it -yourself job almost any
homeowner can handle.
Before you begun putting
panels up, though, be ab-
solutely certain they are pro-
perly cut and will fit the wall
space you want to cover. 1 u

stall panelling. Once this is

You should make sure
walls and panels are clean,
and free from dirt and par-
ticles, before applying
adhesive. Once you have
panels in place, use shims or
blocks to keep them snug

If you have s,, en thinking of finishing that cellar or con-
verting the basement into an all-purpose room, try
creating a media centre that doubles as an entertainment
area. To get a beautiful, rustic look, use Italian terra cotta

equipment will increase
initial cost of the pool, it will
help save both time and
money later on, the pool
institute claims.
Portable cleaning
systems, operated on the
same principle and powered
by a garden hose, are
available for use in already
constructed pools.
A heavy duty vinyl pool
cover, ave ing around
$200 for a rectangular home
pool, can be a sound main-
tenance investment. Kept on
the pool during the winter
months, it will elmininate
m.uch of the spring clean up
chore.
A cover also makes sense
in summertime when the
owner plans to be gone for
two weeks or more — both to
keep the pool clean and to
keep out univited swimmers.
Special problems may
arise, however, even in well
maintained pools. One of
these in algae. Algae com-
monly appears in two forms:
black algae, which makes
unsightly spots on pool walls,
and green floating algae.
Both are normally taken
care of by a regular main-
tenance program, but
stubborn cases may be
treated by vigorous brushing
of spots, followed by ap-
plication of spot killer and
use of special inexpensive
algaecides.
Another problem, red -
brown discolored water, is
caused by a high con-
centration of dissolved iron.
Disinfectants may oxidize
this dissolved iron, leaving
rust particles in the pool.
Use oxidizing sanitizer and
run the filtration system for
98 hours straight to clear out
the particles. Should par-
ticles settle to the bottom,
they should be vacuumed up
immediately to avoid
staining the pool bottom.

The first panel you put up
should butt an adjacent wall
in a corner. Make sure the
panel is completely plurnb
and that its outer edge is
parallel with the plumb line.
If the outer edge does not
fall directly on a stud, you
should scribe or mark the
panel to the adjacent wall so
the panel's edge comes to the
centre of the studs. This will
allow room for nailing your
next panel.
Hint: Once you locate a
joint, paint a matching color
strip on the wall along its
length so that any gap you
leave between panel edges
will be less noticeable.
If you use regular
finishing nails on panelling,
nails require countersinking
and touch up with a putty
stick to harmonize with the
panelling. Or, you may use
colored nails to eliminate
countersinking and putty
stick.

bathroom being heard in the

Your main bathroom
should have enough room for
such extras as a medicine
cabinet, vanity, towel racks,
linen storage space and a
laundry hamper.
Sometimes the private
areas of your horse are
separated from the rest of
the house by putting them on
a separate floor. If this is the
case, make sure the stair-
ways are located in halls and
not in a room.
The Ontario Real Estate
Association believes your
home will be more comfor-
table if it is laid out in a
logical, orderly pattern.
Nails are available to
match most panelling color
finishes: in one -inch sue for
direct application to studs
and 15.b -inch fur apphcauon
to backer board, furring
strips or existing walls.
When you start to apply
panelling around windows
and doors, accurate measur-
ing is most important.
Measure from your last ap-
plied panel edge to the trim.
Measure up from the bottom
and down from the top to get
accurate patterns for the
cut-out.
Then, drill a 3'4 -inch hole
from the panel surface side
to provide a turning corner
for your saw. IA keyhole or
sabre saw is helpful for this
kind of cutting.) If possible,
cut-out panels should meet
close to the middle of the
window or door.
