MURRAY E. TAYLOR 482-7928 y ate do yout Interior layout of rooms will make all the difference in the comfort of your home. By grouping rooms in three zones you'll make the best eese of your floor s,..:_ce. Whether you are buying a new home or simply adding rooms to your old one, it is important to pay attention to interior layout. The rooms in your home should be sensibly arranged so that you can live comfor- tably and conveniently. A good general rule for in- terior layout is that rooms should be grouped in three zones. One zone is a private area including bedrooms and bathrooms. The second in- corporates the kitchen, the laundry room or other work rooms. The final zone is the entertaining area which in- cludes the living room, fami- ly room and dining room. Rooms should be arranged so the activities in one zone do not interfere with others. Noise from the living room should not disturb someone sleeping in the bedroom and people should not have to walk through the kitchen work area to get from one room to the next. Ideally, there should be two entrances to the house. The front entrance should lead directly to the centre of ttyie house and the entertain- ent zone. It should not open directly into the living room, but should have direct ac- cess to it. There should be a coat closet near this door. The rear entrance should come from the garage area and have direct access to the kitchen. This allows you to carry groceries from the car to the kitchen conveniently. You should also have a direct entrance to the base- ment from outside. This is sometimes incorporated in the rear entrance. The kitchen is the centre of your home. Both entrances should therefore be directly accessible from the kitchen. Most of the work in the kit- chen flows between three centres: the refrigerator, the range and the sink. These three should be ar- ranged in a logical way and set off from the door so that people coming through will not interfere with the work done here. Make sure there is adequate counter and cabinet space. There should be a counter near the refrigerator so you can load or unload groceries from it. You may also want to in- clude extra storage space, laundry facilities, a serving counter or a desk in your kit- chen. See that your floor plan allows for extras such as these. The dining room should be accessible from both the kit- chen and the living room. In newer homes the dining room is often merely an ex- tension of the living room to save space. There should be enough space to allow you to group furniture in one or two circles about 10 feet across. If there is a fireplace naturally it should be the central feature of your fur- niture arrangement. The view from the living room should be blocked off in some way from the private areas of your house. Privacy demands that an individual be free to go from bedroom to bathroom without being seen from the living room. Most fair sized houses should have at least three bedrooms, one full bath and one lavatory. Bedrooms should be well - lit with at least one light con- trolled from a switch near the door. Each bedroom should have at least one large closet containing a shelf low enough to be reached easily but high enough that your clothes can be hung under it. The closet also helps sound- proof the room. A bathroom between bedrooms helps in sound- proofing too. Extra sheetrock or insulation in- stalled in the walls also aids in preventing noise from the Turn to page 7 Theo rii 2 'th - Thar, Incl des - cute co d t per styli g )deg.
