Steel, plastic and glass are
wonderful modern-day
decorating materials and
perform many functions in
the home. But only one
material - wood - can add
that ageless charm and
warmth to a room.
Here are room -by -room
suggestions in decorating
with wood that will at once
delight the eye and be useful.
Family Room - The effec-
tive family room functions
as both an informal gather-
ing place and a cosy room
for more formal entertain-
ing.
Start by establishing a
conversation area. Arrange
seating around music,
games, TV and other
favorite family activities.
Use wooden dividers,
screens or shelving to sec-
tion off areas. Wooden
chairs, frames or plant
holders add a rich, comfor-
table touch.
Bedroom - Want to prop up
your feet in a serene setting?
Decorating with wood
creates a delightful at-
mos,, ere in any bedroom.
Schoolmaster desks, re-
quiring little room and han-
dy for storage, are ideal for
bedroom offfices . Small
shelves and wall plaques
complete a bedroom work
area. Use a magazine rack
for business journals or
reference materials.
For snack dining, try a tilt -
top table or a small drop-leaf
end table. Space problems?
Get stackable tables or
snack tables with caddies.
Dining room - This should
be a quiet room, to provide
time out from modern liv-
ing's frantic pace. For a
long, narrow dialing area,
choose an elongated oblong
table.
Round butterfly tables set
off square spaces nicely.
Ladder -back chairs form a
handsome pattern against
the wall, while saving mid-
dle floor space.
Mirrors, creating the im-
pression of a larger area,
also spotlight drapery colors
d will
and wail hangings.
Single mirrors with curved
Colonial frames are highly
decorative. Smaller mirrors,
interspersed with wood pla-
ques and carvings, bring in-
terest to a dull wall.
A hostess cart eliminates
trips to the kitchen and con -
verbs to a decorative stand
between meals.
Kitchen - Here, order and
function must be reflected,
in contrast to the dining
room, where the snood is all-
unportant. But this does not
mean decorating for a
laboratory and office.
Storage boxes, for exam-
ple, need not impart a
warehouse effect. Wooden
bread boxes, sugar and flour
canisters are both func-
tional and decorative.
A handy labelled spice
rack is efficient; in wood, it
is warm and inviting. A
glass -covered cheese board
is useful, as cheese should be
served at room temperature.
The glass keeps it fresh, the
wood snakes it tempting.
Decorative cutting boards
are beautiful on the wall, ex-
cellent fur chopping and can
be used as serving trays.

check your upholstery tag
for specifics. (The industry
has adopted a standard
cleanability code to indicate
the proper method for doing
all types of upholstery
fabric.)
Once you've gotten the tag
go-ahead, you're ready to
begin the easy, six -step pro-
cedure. Here's how to do it:
Pre-test the fabric for col-
or fastness - Choose an in-
conspicuous area of your
upholstered piece and rub
the spot with a clean, wet
cloth. if no color is
transferred to the cloth, your
piece is colorfast. (If the col-
or bleeds or changes,
however, it's a g• e r, idea to
get in touch with the
manufacturer for cleaning
advice.) With exception of
velvet, satin and silk, just
about all upholstery fabrics
are cleanable if they are
shrink -resistant and color-
fast.
Vacuum thoroughly -
Vacuum the piece complete-
ly and thoroughly to remove
surface dirt. Be sure not to
forget the crevices.
Apply upholstery shampoo
- Following the can rec-
tions, spread the cleaning
foam with a circular motion.
To avoid wetting the pad++ i g
or fiberfill, take care to use
as little moisture as possible.
It's best to work from the
edges of the soiled area
toward the center.
Wipe the piece with a
damp sponge - To be sure the
residual shampoo has been
removed, it's a good idea to
wipe the piece down with a
damp sponge.
Vacuum thoroughly again
- After allowing the
upholstery to dry thoroug i y
- which usually takes a:unit
an hour - vacuum again to be
extra certain that all the
shampoo has been removed.
Apply fabric protector -
Making sure the piece is
perfectly dry, hold the can
about eight inches away'nd
spray the upholstery
thoroughly. This will keep
your furniture cleaner
longer because once treated,
spills will simply bead up
and can easily be whisked
away.
Your upholstery is now
protected until the next time
you shampoo!
