In cut -pile construction, these loops are cut so there are always two yarn ends in each tuft. Density, the number of tufts packed into each square inch and pile height also influence durability. The deeper the pile, the more luxurious the feel. However, low pile heights tend to wear better. Level -loop carpets have dense, heavy yarn with a tough texture and low pile m height. It's not fancy or lux - 0 uy carpet vinous, but it wears like steel. The tough density and low pile help it withstand heavy foot -traffic so it's ideal in high traffic areas such as family rooms. Dirt is easy to pick up as nt tends to stay on top of the low pile. Plush carpet is a cut -loop pile with dense construction. Shag, a tall loose plush, is made with tufts much far- ther apart. Yarn ends overlap so when traffic hits the pile, it wears the sides rather than the tips of the yarn. Frieze, or twist styles, look similar to plashes except for their grainier surface tex- ture. The tightly twisted yarn is heat -set to reduce raveling and fraying. They resist crushing and matting and don't show footprints or shade like ordinary plashes. The purpose of carpet pad- ding is to support the back of the carpet so it won't rub against the floor. Common padding materials are polyurethane, urethane and foam. All can vary in performance accor- ding to manufacturer. Most people look for pad- ding that feels soft and cushy. This often proves to be a mistake since very cushy padding can go flat under constant traffic. It is best to choose a more rigid material that w..! keep its shape and not "bottom -out." Some carpets come with attached rubber backing so they are too difficult to in- stall yourself. You can either glue the carpet down or lay it in place. Installing carpet with separate padding is more difficult. The padding must be put in place one section at a time and stapled down. Glueing is not recommend- ed. The carpet must then be stretched taut to reach beyond the padding edge.
