G STREET ® CLINTON 482=9393 PAGE la—Ci eNThN NRWS-RECCIRD WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13, Rod's Report n Sports son Finals will be close By Rod kffits Sports Editor Round one of the National Hockey League playoffs is uver with a couple of upsets taking place. One of the biggest upsets was the New York Rangers three game sweep over the Philadelphia Flyers.. Philadelphia's defence crumbled and their inex- perience us the goaltending department definitely hurt their chances. Buffalo's sweep over Montreal turned quite a few heads as the superb goaltending of Bob Sauve led the Sabres to victory. Sauve shut out the C'anadiens twice in Montreal and only allowed two goals in Buffalo's win un home ice. Hats off to the Toronto Maple Leafs for their gutsy performance against the Minnesota North Stars. The Leafs were nussing four key players from their lineup but sheer determination carried them to an excellent performance against the North Stars. In the last game of series the Leafs resembled a band of wounded soldiers heading into an endless war. With a couple of breaks the leafs could have won the series. Even with Dan Daoust back in the lineup it might have been euuugh to shoot down the Stars. Last week Rod's Report on Sports was 6-2 in predicting the semi-final outcomes. This week it's time fur the divison final predictions. Norris Division Minnesota vs. Chicago - This series should be very close with the Black Hawks winning in seven games. Look for a physical series with each team's powerplay l,tcssibly determining the outcome. Smythe Division l'algary vs. Edmonton - On the power of Gretzky alone the Oilers should smother the Flames. This series won't be an Oiler sweep but Calgary goalies Lemelin and EA wards have their work cut out if they hope to cxtent the series beyond five games. Adams Division Buffalo vs. Boston - This could be one of the tougher series to decide. If the Sabres get the goaltending performance from Sauve this series could go down to the wire. Buffalo proved in the Montreal series that they can put the puck in the net and play a strong defensive game at the same time. Goaltending will decide it with the series edge going to Boston in seven games. Patrick Division New York Rangers vs. New York Islanders - This subway series could go on record as the wildest yet. Both clubs appear ready for the battle of Manhattan as there's no love lost between these two teams. The Rangers can't be taken lightly, especially in front of their animal -like fans on home ice. The Islanders ;t'ould take this series in six games but stranger things cave happened. Quotable Quotes 1 e be puffed with conceit d„t s not make anyone a swcil guy. Teenager we know found a way to save money. He uses his parents'. Ma Y progri its Are you athletically in- clined or would you like to become more athletic? Do you enjoy a good physical workout or a quick, refreshing dip in a heated pool? 1! so, the Vanastra Community Centre is the athlete's paradise that is waiting to satisfy your recreational needs and preferences. The Vanastra Community Centre is located in the heart of Vanastra and is open to anyone who enjoys recreation. The Centre was partially constructed in 1974 when a swimming pool was added to the existing hall. A recreation committee was formed and with the backing of Tuckersmith Township plans were made to expand the facility. In 1981 the Centre was expanded to facilitate the physically handicapped at a cost of $250,000. The Centre received grants from the Ministry of Culture and Recreation and Wintario to help with funding of the project. Local fund-raising also helped finance the addition. The addition included a fitness room, complete with a universal gym and a offered v ra Centr variety of weights and exercise charts. Change rooms, : n activity room and a sauna made the addition complete. Great variety According to Recreation Director Diane Durnin the addition has allowed for a greater variety of programs in the Centre. A number of special need groups have been using the facility since it was adapted for the handicapped. She says that the Bluewater Centre in Goderich, the Stroke Club from the Day Centre at Huronview and the Clinton Mental Health Resource Centre have been using the facility and have been participating in the variety of programs that have been offered. The Centre offers a special individual courses for people who are handicapped or need physical therapy. At present a victim of polio is going through a special program organized by the Centre. An arthritis program, which is based on water therapy, is also being offered. According to Mrs. Durnin an individual course can be set up for anyone who is interested, with fees depending on the situation Plaques donated Names of those who have given $1000 or more to the new Seaforth and District Community Centres, some of them memorial donations, will appear on plaques in the new building in time for the June 4 official opening. "But we'll only be able to put up plaques for the open- ing if donations have been received in full by May 1," says fund raising chairman Marlen Vincent. He told the Expositor the community centres' committee hopes people who have pledged $1000 or more but have not pain the whole amount yet, may want to speed up their payments in order to have a plaque with their name on it on the arena wall at the time of the opening. "The May 1 deadline is necessary to have the pla- ques prepared in time," Mr. Vincent said. Anyone who has donated a lesser amount and can give a little more to make a total donation of $1000 will also be recognized with a plaque, he added. FIRST DIVISION ST. Mrs. Durnin says that pe, ;• le can make suggestions as to some of the programs they would like to see at the Centre. " W e welcome suggestions. People are recognizing that fitness should be a part of their lives," she stressed. According to Mrs. Durnin the pool is used a lot by Huron County schools. Grade 3 or 4 students from schools in the county are participating in the learn to swim courses that run for eight sessions lasting one hour each. Mrs. Durnin says the Centre had a suucessful winter program with a number of people par- ticipating. "The lack of snow for winter recreation brought them out here," she ex- plained. Mrs. Durnin noted that there was an increase in the number of "pay as you come" users but the membership of 100 last year stayed about the same this year. Transportation problems Mrs. Durnin says that a transportation problem has limited the number of people in the county from taking advantage of the facility. „There is a group looking at the problem and they are trying to set up a tran- sportation system for the handicapped in Seaforth, Clinton and in the Townships of Tuckersmith and McKillop," she noted. According to Rosemary Armstrong, a member of the Haaron County Community Service Council, .:st year the group h:d the .agreement in praciple" from Seaforth, Clinton and the area townships to pay 5) per cent of the operating costs of a transportation system. The group is awaiting a decision from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications as to whether they would pay the other 50 per cent of the cost. The proposal is based upon a transportation system for disabled persons, in which a user fee would be charged. According to Seaforth Clerk Jim Crocker the transportation issue is "at a standstill." Mr. Crocker says that the ministry's decision to fund the proposed transportation system "is being held up by the Ontario cabinet." Spring program With or without public transportation the Vanastra Community Centre is of- fering a number of 10 week spring sessions that start at various times this week. An advanced Trina -size program kicks off on Wednesday and a variety of swimming courses get un- derway this week. The Centre offers special programs every three months for the public's enjoyment. This spring get into the fitness feeling and par- ticipate in the number of excellent programs being offered at the Vanastra Community Centre.
