The Toa`ogato S;x4:4rtsinean's Show, forffierly known as
the Canadian National S ;lrtszi:leae's Show is o I again,
month from March 18 to the 27. Every year, this show
gets a little bigger, and 1't`3:: La am) exception. Over
exhier *tors will ;,; there showing Jaast a.0 I Hlit everything
there is that will a: f. .I: interest to outdoor oriented
ple-
Barbara Woodhouse, world famous 1<.,_ :e:iner, will
be there giving two demonstrations ss,, r day fondly
through Friday in the Arena at the Coliseuna.
Elephants and tigers from the African Lion Safari will
also be on display, as well as musical shows and dozens
of outdoor demonstrations.
But the best bet, according to Manager, John
Houghton, will be the super bargains available at the
show. "For the past few years, we've noted a trend to
terrific bargains and deals being offered by ex-
hibitors," says Houghton. "There's no :4. tier place to
get camping or fishing equipment this spring, and e
prices will be right. "
The show is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays.
10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on
Sundays. Admission is Adults $5.00; Juniors and Senior
Citizens $3.00; and Children under 5 free.

If you are a salmon fisherman, then this notice will
be of interest to you! Charlie White's famous "Salmon
Spectacular" will be showing in the area, and if you're
a serious "downrigger", it's something you can't miss.
This 90 minute full colour feature film will actually
show you more and teach you more about how and why
salmon take a lure than even a whole life of experience
could begin to. Charlie, using specially adapted under-
water video equipment, and tiny remote controlled TV
cameras, actually puts you right down there where the
fish are, and shows them taking the bait. Biologists in
both Canada and the U.S. suspect that White's findings
apply to all game fish, but one thing they are sure of, it
definitely does apply to salmon.
Cameras attached to the lure show fascinating
closeups of the actual strike, and slow motion replays
allow the audience to discover what it is that triggers
the fish's instinct to attack. His side by side, on
camera, lure comparison tests show for the first time
how fish react to lure action, size, vibration and smell.
Plugs, spoons, flies, dodgers, flashers and baits are all
included in the tests.
Other sequences show huge schools of bait fish under
attack, the feeding frenzy of Pacific sharks, eagles
swooping down on their prey and even crabs entering a
baited trap. The film climaxes with the dramatic
underwater on camera strike and struggle of a huge 56
pound King Salmon.
A National Geographic or Jacques Cousteau type
film with brightly lit scenes and colourful fish, it is not.
Natural light must be used to obtain natural reactions
from the fish, and it's taken years of research, trial and
error to develop the techniques in use today by Charlie
White.
The film also dispels some of the old myths concern-
ing fishing. One example is that during the test, fish
after fish invariably hit a lure which had been
deliberately dunked into some smelly old bilge oil. So
much for washing your hands often and using super
clean lures. Perhaps Grandpa's technique of spitting
tobacco juice on his worm has something to recom-
mend it after all.
At any rate, the "Salmon Spectacular" will be shown
in Guelph on April 5 at John F. Ross Collegiate: in
Kitchener -Waterloo on April 7 at the University of
Waterloo; in Cambridge on April 12 at the Gait Col-
legiate Institute; and in London on April at Centen-
nial Hail. The notice I received stated that, tickets
would be on sale at local sporting goods stores in the ci-
ty where the showing will be. It will pro[..,bly be more
than worthwhile for the interested fisherman to make a
few calls to the areas concerned to obtain the needed
information. Any further information I receive will be
• relayed in this column.
