11,1 y: rs tz "' pith r min (/eg Community nity and Social Services filnanister Frank Drea has finally consented to a meeting with mainicipal of- ficials affected by the closure of the six regional centres for the developmen- tally handicapped. Ina letter to council, Drea indicated he would proceed to arrange a meeting with the mayors of the six af- fected municipalities. Goderich mayor, Eileen Palmer, told the Signal -Star the mayors met with Drea at Queens Park during the afternoon of Wednesday, February 23. The meeting was arranged at the insistence of the mayors of Goderich, Brockville, St. Thomas, Aurora, Cobourg and Whit- by. Palmer said the mayor of Woodstock has also been invited to the Queen's Park meeting since the Ministry is planning to close an addi- tional 173 beds there. Palmer said that ministry officials will outline Drea's five-year plan with the mayors and then consult with the group on communi- ty issues and concerns related to the closure of the facilities. The mayors have also been invited to dine with Drea. Earlier Wednesday mayor Palmer attended an Associa- tion of Municipalities of On- tario (AMO) meeting in Toronto and she fully ex- pected that board to pass a resolution opposing the closure of the regional cen- tres for the developmentally handicapped. OPP issue ice warnings Toronto-OPP Com- missioner James Erskine recently issued a warning about the conditions of ice on lakes and rivers in Ontario. Seven persons have lost their lives in a nine -day period between February 12 and February 20 in different types of accidents. The deaths resulted from snowmobiles or vehicles breaking through the ice. One tragic case involved a five-year-old girl who ventured out on ice near her home. Because of the mild winter, the ice has not reached its normal t'ckness and has deteriorated earlier than usual. Many rivers now have open stretches of water or only a thin skin of ice because running water has eroded the ice from un- derneath. The tragic loss of life prompted Commissioner Erskine to issue this war- ning: "No one should go out on frozen rivers or lakes unless they have made certain that local conditions are safe." Even larger lakes have developed pressure cracks and sorne cars belonging to ice fishermen have gone through the ice. This has caused problems on Lake Erie where fishermen were reported adrift on ice floes and had to be rescued by helicopters. Ttsr Humane Society to form branch Responding to requests from the public for an organization that could concern itself with abuses to animals and animal neglect in the regional area of south- western Ontario, as distinct from the towns and cities in that area, the Ontario Humane Society has called a meeting to discuss the for- mation of a southwestern Ontario regional branch. The meeting will be held in the auditorium of the London Humane Society located on the Clarke Sideroad in London on Saturday, March 19. commencing at 9:30 a.m Representatives of branches of the Society in Oxford County, Elgin County, Kent County, Huron County, Perth County and Brantford will attend this meeting together with representatives from the London Humane Society and the Sarnia and Distract SPCA CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, WEDNESDAY, M R,CIii 2, 1983 ---PAGE 5 'rilceG in .tett. 1 till` (lO,slnt; time Saturday,., art We reserve•t'h.e• rt t to (•11il;lt •qudntities•. • ICA - ASSO ICA - PURE POTATO CHIPS 200 G.
