Mr. Barrie was speaking to directors of both the Huron and Perth Federa- tions of Agriculture at a seminar in St. Columban on Feb. 24. ".The bottom line is if the OFA can't respond to the greatest need, someone else will come along and do it," said Mr. Barrie. With a membership of over 25,111, Mr. Barrie said the OFA represents the silent majority, but the vocal minority is getting the public's attention. Relgrave boy makes CBC television debut The CBC series For The Record will open this season with the program Ready For Slaughter, starring Gordon Pinsent. Although this show will be seen coast to coast, it should be of particular interest to local audiences. This "docu-drama", filmed on location at a farm near Lion's Head, deals with a predicament that comes close to many farmers these days - rising costs, falling prices, and the threat of bankruptcy. One of the principal actors is home grown. Patrick Cull, of the Belg:-ave area, plays 12 year old Jordy. He was one of the more than 40 youngsters who auditioned for the part. According to Doug Barnes, of CBC casing, Patrick was chosen because of several qualities including a dry sense of humor, an ability to understand the dramatic situation quickly, and a knowledge of rural life. Asked what hp' liked o bout him Add acting adventur, Patrick said it was really interesting going to Toronto for thy`°. au lion. He also particularly enjoyed working with well known actors like Gordon Pinsent, Dianna Belshaw, Layne Coleman, Booth Savage, and Mayor S said the vast majority want to appear responsible, but that doesn't always fill the need. The OFA's response to the current economic dif- ficulties experienced by fanners is to establish a counselling service through its headquarters in Toronto. '.It's still in the process of being set up, but I believe ' that program has tremen- dous potential," said the OFA president noting that some fanners are having a tough time dealing with finances. While not condoning or condemning the farm sur- vivalist movement, Mr. Bar- rie said he recognizes there is a lot of frustration in the farming world and the sur- vivalists must be filling some kind of a need. "I've talked to farmers and 1 ' m really concerned. They are overextended, but ha . working and they need some kind of assistance," said Mr. Barrie. The OFA president reviewed the history of the organization which was in- itially started in the 1930s. Experiencing rapid growth in the 1970s and making ma- jor gains for fanners by lob- bying the provincial and federal governments, the organization now has to decide how it is going to con- tinue working towards its motto, • • Farmers working for Farmers." Other aspects of the OFA, such as the duties and responsibilities of •directors, how the OFA is run, public relations and membership sales were also discussed at the seminar. forther has fiery escape SEAFORTH- A Seaforth woman had a lucky escape late Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 16, when the kitchen of Bill and Jean Wilbee's George St. house was gutted by fire. The Wilbee's kitchen cupboards, made 15 years ago by Seaforth carpenter Hugh McPherson, were Moore. Finally, Patrick said that it was fantastic to be paid well for doing something that he really enjoyed. Patrick's opportunity to participate in this TV drama was the direct result of the Blyth Festival's Children's Workshop. This summer workshop is only one of the advantages that the Blyth Theatre affords the local population. Because of Patrick's experience in the workshop, he was one of the boys recommended to try out for the part by Janet Amos, artistic director of the Blyth Festival Theatre. Janet is excited about the upcoming summer's Children's W6rkshop. Plans include a three week program for younger children, a new one week puppet workshop, and an expansion of the program for older students. Hopes are for both a director who will assist the students to write and direct their own plays, and for ..0 second person to assist the children `'ihterested in being more involved in set design, construction, and the technical side of drama production. Mrs. McPherson's son, Jeff, quickly smothered the flames on her clothes and he and Mr. Wilbee got her out of the house, Mrs. Wilbee ex- plains. Although Mrs. McPherson was "in shock for awhile," she escaped with only singed eyebrows and hair.
