Proper invitatio There as a certain degree of etiquette which surroun' most of the rites of passage an life, not the least of which as the institution of mar - nage. Wedding invitations in particular have strict rues of etiquette attach to them- If your wedding is be- ing planned "by by the book," you will want to heed them. "f raditiona1 weddings call for traditional invitations. The following guidelines, ex- cerpted from the Bride's Welding Planner, will pro- vide you with all you'll meed to know about the wedding invitations: ©®rn the traditional invita- tion, names are written in full — no nicknames or in- itials. No abbreviations ex- cept Mr., Mrs., Ms. and Dr. are used. °Numbers, including those in short addresses, are spell- ed out. Likewise, the date and time of the ceremony is written out. °For a church or temple ceremony, "the honour of etiquette your presence" is re- quested; for a non -church wedding or reception, it is .'the pleasure of you com- pany.,. ''You may request a reply to the reception with "R -S. " or "Please res- pond" in the lower left cor- ner of the invitation. ( Printed reply cards are more suitable for business functions than for social events such as weddings, Bride's points out). ©Invitations are almost always in thee of the bride's parents, even if she lives away from home or has been married before. If her parents are deceas- ed, her guardian, a close relative or a family friend may sponsor the wedding. Where only one parent is living, the invitations are issued in his or her name alone. If the bride's parents are divorced, the name of on- ly one parent — usually the one who raised her — ap- pears on the invitation. If this parent has remar- ried, the step -parent's name also goes on the first line, followed by "has ( or her ) daughter" Lo indicate rela- tionship. If the hosts of the reception are different from those of the wedding, a separate reception invitatic:n is re- quired. «Invitations should be ad- dressed by hand, using a neat, legible script. lJse black ink, if possible, to match the printing. °The guests' full names go on the outside of the envelope, followed by the ad- dress. The inside envelope carries the last name only (Mr. and Mrs. John Doe), and nothing else. °Each adult member of the family receives an in- vitation. So do roommates and dates of single guests. «The phrase "and family" is never used. Instead, in- vited children's names go on a line under their parents' names on the inside envelope.
