The annual meeting of the
Auburn Horticultural
Society was held January 17.
Coffee cookies and Christ-
mas cake was served by
Mrs. Eleanor Bradnock,
Mrs. Jim Schneider and Mrs.
Tom Haggitt 'prior to the
meeting.
President Mrs. Jim
Schneider, opened the
meeting. The minutes were
read by the secretary Mrs.
Tom Haggitt. The auditors
report prepared by Mrs.
Beth Lansing and Mrs.
Oliver Anderson was read by
Mrs. Frances Clark. The
financial statement was
given by the treasurer, Mrs.
Ross Robinson.
A letter was read from
Mrs. Maisie Bray of Lion's
Head reminding members
about the District annual to
be held this year on April 16
at Lucknow.
Mrs. Haggitt reported on
the year's activities which
included five open meetings
and four executive meetings.
She reported that there had
been sale of plants, bus trips,
delegates to District annual
and a country tour of the
home and grounds around
the Blyth creek of Mr. and
Mrs. Stewart Ball, Maitland
Block, Hullett Township.
The members were in-
terested in a bus trip to
Wiarton to see the Flower
Fantasy Show and the date
will be set at a future
meeting.
Mrs. Ross Robinson, past
president presided for the
election of officers. They
were: Past President, Mrs.
Ross Robinson; President,
Mrs. James Schneider; 1st
vice-president, Mrs. Eleanor

Prize winners at the
weekly euchre party held in
the Auburn Community
Memorial hall each Tuesday
evening at 8 p.m. sharp
were: high lady, Mrs. Elliott
Lapp; low lady (playing as a
lady) Tom Hallam; high
man, Kenneth McDougall;
low man, Warner Andrews;
novelty, Mrs. Tom Jardin.
There were eight tables in
play.
The sympathy of this
community is extended to
Mr. and Mrs. Jim Lawlor on
the death of her father, Bert
Moggach of Lindsay. Mrs.
Lawlor left on Saturday and
Mr. Lawlor left on Monday to
attend the funeral.
The congregation of St.
Mark's Anglican Church met
last Tuesday evening at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred
Lawrence and family to
make plans to celebrate the
100th anniversary of the
church on July 1, 2 and 3rd.

Plans to have the first
Silver Tops dinner on
January 26th was made at
the Executive meeting held
last Wednesc.'y. President
Kenneth Scott presided for
the meeting and the minutes
were read by secretary Mrs.
Tom Haggitt. The financial
statement was given by the
treasurer, Mrs. Eleanor
Bradnock.
The certificate for the
Unit ,. Senior Citizens has
been received and Tom
Jardin was put in charge of
framing it so i&can be hung
in the -hall. The committee
who planned the dinner were
Mrs. Tom Haggitt, Mrs.
Lillian Letherland, Mrs. Roy
Deer and Mrs. Eleanor
Bradnock.
All persons sixty years and
over are invited to come and
join the Silver Tops.
Any girl between the ages
of 12 and 26 wishing to take
the 4-1-1 project Ontario
Heritage Cooking please
attend the first meeting on
January 31st at 6:30 p.m. at
the home of Mrs. George
Collins. The leaders for they,
Auburn Club are Mrs. Collins
and Mrs. Douglas Chamney.
They attended the leader's
training school at Clinton
last Wednesday and Thur-
sday.

where she has had her tonsils
removed on Mondaya Her
mother, Mrs. Ross Dobie
stayed at Stratford.
Mr. and Mrs. Oliver
Anderson returned home last
week after a couple of weeks
at Newmarket with their son
William.
Mr. and Mrs. Clayton
Robertson of Meford visited
last week with her sister
Mrs. Tom Jardin and Mr.
Jardin also visited the
ladies' mother, Mrs. Elva
Straughan in Clinton Public
hospital.
Guests with Mr. and Mrs.
Emerson Rodger last
Saturday were Mr. and Mrs.
Bill Helesic of Goderich,
Paul Helesic of Lindsay,
Miss Judy Torrance of
London, Mr. and Mrs. Clare

Mrs. Myrtle Munro and
her son Donald Youngblut of
London, and Mr. and Mrs.
Kenneth McDougall and Mr.
and Mrs. Gordon Gross
attended the funeral of Miss
Mary McEachern at Mount
Forest last week. She was in
her 91st year. The funeral
was held at the Hendrick's
Funeral Home with burial in
Woodland cemetery.
Miss McEachern is sur-
vived by three sisters, Mrs.
Myrtle Munro, Auburn; Mrs.
Nellie McDougall, Goderich;
Miss Grace McEachern,
Mount Forest afid two
brothers, Mr. William
McEachern and Mr. John
McEachern, both of Mount
Forest. One sister Mrs. Ethel
McDougall off Clinton
predeceased her last year.
Youth injured
in accident
On January 23 a car -
snowmobile accident oc-
cured sending a youth to
hospital with major injuries.
Ian Carter, 8, of London
was westbound on Con-
cession 2 and 3 and Andre
Bilcke, 44, of ensall was
travelling northbound when
the two collided.
Damage to the Carter
snowmobile was estimated
at $8t 11 while Bilcke's vehicle
received $100 damage.
Bilcke wasn't injured in
the accident.
Goderich OPP reported
two major accidents last
week in Stanley Township.
Catherine Steckle, of
RR 2 Zurich escaped injury
when the truck she was
driving slid down an em-
nkment and rolled over.
The accident I..,ppened
January 18 on the Hay -
Stanley division line.
Damage to the Steckle

At a special meeting of
H tett Township Council on
January 17, Clerk Harry
Lear prepared a bylaw
setting the wages for the
township employees at a 45
cent increase per hour and
the benefit plan to be
deducted when it becomes
effective.
According \,to Clerk Lear
the increase was in keeping
with the government's 6 and
5 guidelines.
The road superintendent's
wage will rise from $9 an
hour to $9.45. The grader
operator's wage rose from
$8.40 to $8.85. A second
grader operator's wage will
remain at $8.45 as it was just
raised in early December.

A retirement dinner party
and dance was held for
Maitland Edgar of Petrolia
on January 22 at the Legion
Hall in Watford.
Mait received his public
school education at the Stone
School S.S. No. 7 on the se-
cond line of Morris
Township, Huron County. He
attended Wingham and
District High School and
after graduating started
teaching at the age of 17, at
Tipperary Public School,
S.S. No. 9 Goailerich
Township where he had an
average attendance of 26
students in grades 1 to 8 from
1946 to 1951.
He taught at the Milton
Public School for about six
months and from there he
moved to the A.M. Hugh
Campbell School, Clinton
R.C.A.F. where he taught
from 1952 -1962.
From 1962 - 1967 he taught
at the Central Huron Secon-
dary School, Clinton and
from 1967 - 1°a,9 he was Head
of Geography at the South
Huron Secondary School in
Exeter. In 19601977 he was
Vice Principal at the Lamb -
ton Central Collegiate Voca-
tional Institute in Petrolia
and from 1977 - 1982 he was
principal at the East Lamb -
ton Secondary School in Wat-
ford.
During all his years of
teaching Mait advanced his
education through cor-
respondence and by summer
school courses at Western
University London where he
obtained his Bachelor of Arts
Degree.
At his retirement dinner,
John Beaton head of the
English De,. .l rtment at East
Lambton, was Master of
Ceremonies. Head table
guests were Jim Cassia,
Superintendent of Schools
for Lambton County, Robert
Watson. Principal's Assis-
tant at East Lambton and
Harry McEwan, Senior Con-
sultant, Investors Syndicate
Limited, Chatham.
The program was organiz-
ed by Ida Traxler, Head of
Student Services at East
Lambton with the help of the
entire staff (secretarial,
custodial and instructional).
Anecdotes related to
Mait's life were read by John
eaton, Robert Watson,
Harry McEwan, Nancy
Daer, Brian Edgar and Doug
Turner (head of custodians).
The 'Retirement" cake
was baked and decorated by
Pat Wright, teacher of
mathematics and science at
East Lambton.
Approximately 90 attend-
ed the dinner and 200 attend-
ed the dance. Relatives and
is
friends were trom Clinton,
Exeter, Sarnia, Petrolia,
Strathroy, Parkhill, Wat-
ford, London, Chatham,
Brigden, Wingham,
Brussels, Blyth and
Belgrave.

the west side of Lot 38,
Concession 13 to the huddle
of Lot 37 and from the
Sideroad 35-36 to the tile
outlet. The road culvert is to
be replaced if necessary.
Council approved a tile
drain loan for Herman
Ramaker, Lot 28, Concession
4 for $12,000. It is subject to
township bylaws and
availability of funds.
The road superintendent
was authorized by council to
have the truck doors and
rocker panels repaired and
painted at an estimated cost
of $325.
Council also decided not to
give a grant to the Ontario
March of Dimes.
