PAGE 14—CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, WE NESDAY, JANUARY 12, Broomball has been Blyth s best for 20 years y RodI4IIt Broomball at Blyth has always proved to be one of the more popular sports in the area and this year is no exception. The league has been in existence for about 20 years and is made up of a men's and women's +:: vision. The Men's Central West Division consists of 10 teams: The Blyth Bears, the 8th liners, Lakelet Hornets, Atlas Rams, Auburn, Goderich Oarsmen, Lariesville Lords, Maitland Dirt -Riders, Clinton Warriors and a. League team. The Women's Central West Division has seven teams: Lucknow, Belgrave, Auburn, Blyth Baintoneers, Brussels. the Gravel Runners and Goderich. The Broomball season started on October 19 and runs for 154 games with playoffs commencing on Febuary 16. Elgin Pease, 37, is a 20 year veteran with the 8th Liners squad, and he feels the league has improved a lot over the years. "There's a lot more in- terest in Blyth Broomball now. To make the league more competitive Blyth Broom - ball President Ken Quipp has split each division into a Blyth loop and a Belgrave loop. The Blyth men's tier is made up of the Atlas Rams, the Blyth Bears, Lakelet Hornets and a League team. The women's Blyth tier consists of Blyth Bain- toneers. Belgrave, Auburn and Goderich. The Belgrave men's loop is made up of the 8th Liners, Goderich, Maitland, Clinton and Lanesville. The ladies loop consists of Lucknow Brussels and the Gravel Runners. When the playoffs are over the top eight teams in both the men's and women's division will qualify for the Central Ontario Broomball Association IC.W.O.B.A.1 playdowns in Palmerston. How they score Tuesday night in the Blyth Broomball league the Baintoneers and Belgrave ladies played to a 0-0 draw in a tightly knit game while the Brussels ladies sneaked past Lucknow 1-0 with Michelle Vader scoring the winning goal late in the game. Ln men's play Auburn dumped the League Team 7- 0 with Phil Black and Terry Powell each getting three points in the game. The men's division will be split into an 'A' and 'B' tier with $800 going to both winners. The ladies winner will take home $700. All games will be played in the Blyth and Brussels arenas. Come out and support your local team. this week in a fast, hard-hitting game; and the 8th Liners blew the Warriors from Clinton away downing them 8-0 with Arnold Pease getting three goals, Murray McNichol four points, and Jim Blake get- ting three points. On Thursday night Lucknow ladies and the (ravel Runners played to a 0-0 draw and the Auburn ladies clipped Goderich 1-0 with Debbie Cook scoring the game winner. In men's play Lanesville Lords and Goderich Oarsmen battled to a 1-1 draw and the Blyth Bears and Maitland Dirt Riders played to a 1-1 tie. Atlas Rams and Lakeief Hornets battled it out with the Rams coming out on top 4-3 with Greg Cook netting the game winner and Done Kreller getting three points for the Hornets in a losing effort. In Blyth broomball league play on January 6, the Atlas Rams squeaked by the Lakelet Hornets 4-3. The next meeting will be held January 26th at 2 p.m. Watsons edge the Inn 5-3 In Blyth Industrial Hockey League action January 2, Watsons edged Blyth Inn 5 - 3. Mike Mallot scored twice for Watsons and singles went to John Watson, John Uyl and Grant Vincent.. Dale Whitfield, Ron Howson and Steve Howson tallied for Blyth Inn. In the second pame Rad - fords trounced Baintons 11 - 3. Jim Kellar led Radfords with three goals, Derwin Carter, Ken Ritchie and Ron Hunking each added two, and Steve Reid and Don Carter completed the scor- ing. Barney Stewart scored three times for Baintons. In the last game Mannings outlasted Hubbards 12 - 9. Manning scorers were Wayne McDougall with five, Pete Cook with four, Steve Bromley added two and Dave Conley. Hubbards got three goals from Brian Bromley, Brad Bromley and Terry Pierce each tallied twice and Brian Black and GusVan Massenhaven rounded out the scoring. No interest, no skating There have been some statments made since the holidays that there wasn't enough skating at the Blyth Arena for the children when they were out of school. When Arena Managers David and Russell Cook were asked about it they both cited lack of interest as the reason. The event opened on t'hristmas Sunday afternoon and only a handful showed up. (1n Tuesday afternoon of the holiday week, skating from 2-4 p.m. yielded only 12 intersted persons. ;'lr.
