Clinton News-Record, 1983-01-12, Page 8PAGE 8—CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, WEDNESDAY , JANUARY 12, 1983 Pri ter to November 1 the story of the Clinton Mustang Junior C season was not a pleasant one. The team was struggling with a 1-7 record tinder Coach Dave Wilkin- son. Today under new Head Coach Jin Nigro the team has a revitalized spirit and a much improved 9-12 record, good for fourth place in their , wisnon. Winning is noth foreign to Jim "Tiny" Nigro and his 15 year coaching career. Nigro hails from Stratford >v. Jim "Tiny Nigro" Must wnere he has succeeded as both a player and a coach. Hes coaching days started in 1967 with the Stratford Juveniles when he led the team to four league cham- pionships and three All - Ontario championships. In 1981-82 Nigro led the Stratford Major Midgets to the All -Ontario cham- pionships. Winning seems to follow hurl wherever he travels. In 1972 Nigro was honored by the city of Stratford as Sportsman of the Year for his job with the cham- pionship juvenile squad and his affiliation with sports in Stratford. His list of awards didn't 'tin as hp w;.44: honored again m 1973 and 1982 as Coach of the Year. Nigro is currently em- ployed at Kroehler Furniture in Stratford where he is involved with quality con- trol. Nigro has Junior hockey coaching experience as he spent a year in Seaforth coaching the Junior D's before going to Cambridge to finish part of a Junior B season. When Nigro took over the Mustang coaching reins m early November he knew the team had the right attitude and that all the club needed was motivation. "We , had one practice together beffo our next game. After : a practice 71 knew that the team had a winning attitude," said Nigro. Nigro's future as a coach in Clinton following this season r ,mains uncertain. "I hope to finish up this season and after that it's up to the team's executive as to what happens. Right now I just want to do well and then we will sit and talk," said Nigro. As the season wears on and the playoffs approach the Clinton Mustangs under new Coach Jim Nigro appear to be a contender to be reckoned with. Support for ringette The Clinton Ringette team is now into their third season of play. Although the girls have not succeeded in winning in the past, their improvement of skills has won them two games, one tie and two losses. Ringette is a sport for girls using a sawed-off hockey stick and a rubber ring. Since ringette is a hard sport to explain in words, find out for yourself and attend the game at the Clinton arena Sunday, For your convenience, clip out this rate table for future reference .r. Fish arid Game club Amid hats and ,".orns, hugs and kisses, The Clinton Fish and Game Club rang in the New Year at the club dance. A good selection of music was played by Dave and Wendy Mitton of Sensational Sound, and the members and guests danced from one year into the next. Thanks goes to John McKeagan, from Pizza Train for donating pizzas and fries for a late evening meal. His thoughtful generosity started the new year off in style. Although there was a poor turnout for the dance, New Year's Day was a different story. A large number of members and guests came down to the clubhouse, to meet and visit with old friends and new ones. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves, and that we'll see you again before the year is out. Members are reminded that darts are back again every Friday evening, and that you're welcome to come and join in. Last Saturday the club hosted the Huron County Dart League. The group of 12 teams packed in- to the clubhouse for darts and steaming chili, prepared by Betty Switzer. In other business last mon- th, there were some new members.
