Because of the post office holiday on Monday, last week's copy was late arriving at the News- Record- 1 was away the previous Monday, which accounts for some Christmas hews in this issue. On Christmas Monday, Mervyn and Margaret Hayter entertained Marg's mother, Mrs. Mabel Glenn of Zurich, and brothers Bruce, his wife Jessie and boys of Toronto, and Gerald and Ardys of Hensall and their son Randall of Windsor. The Consitt family held their Christmas gathering in Varna Hall on Christmas Day, and on Christmas Sunday, the Mel Webster family gathered there. Guests with Charles and Bernice Reid on Christmas Day were Rev. Wilena Brown, Mrs. Belle Reid, Bill and Mary Reid, Doug, Peggy and Meggin, and Charlene. On Monday, they entertained members of the Blake family. The Barry Taylors and the Don Taylors joined their family at Bob and Willa's in Clinton on Christmas Day. On Sunday the Evans family, which includes Pat and Barry Taylor and Barb and Torn Consitt, gathered at the home of Bev. and Herb Brenneman at Petersburg. Pete Postill is home and feeling much better after being confined to St. Joseph's Hospital for two and a half weeks following surgery There were 11 tables in play at the L.O.L. euchre party on Friday night. Ladies' high and low prizes went to Jean McEwen and Omerine Watkins. Men's high and low were won by Wilfred Chuter and Harvey Godbolt. Draw prizes were donated by L.O.L. members and Ed Gale of the Tank and Tummy. Winners were Ernie Brown, Jessie God - bolt, Annie ;,YFinkbeiner, Betty Thompson and Ferne Baker. Margaret Hayter was the hostess and program con- vener for the January meeting of Varna U.C.W., with Carol Simons assisting her. Margaret led the worship using a New Year litany and rea 'rigs. Carol wished everyone a Happy New Year by means of a Bible quiz she had written 'herself, and which the women enjoyed doing. Doris Wilson, who has been president for the past two years and an active member for many more, was honor with a I.ife Mem- bership Certificate and Pin. Mrs. Jessie Keyes read the address and Maureen Hayter presented her with the pin. Bernice Reid opened the business meeting with a scripture verse and prayer. Reports were read, also thank you notes from those receiving flowers, Christmas treats and gifts, and the girls who were given bridal showers and from Camp Menesetung for a $50 donation. Delegates to the Presbyterial meeting in Seaforth are Bernice Reid, Eleanor McAsh and Mar- jorie Stirling, with Margaret Hunt as an alternate delegate. The pancake supper will be held on Shrove Tuesday, February 15. A new library in the hallway of the Manse will include books and resource materials. A former member, Mrs. Belle Reid of Batfield, reached the honorable age of 85 years on the fith, and is well, although recovering from a bad cold at that time. Rev. Wilena Brown is preaching a series of ser- mons on the basics of our faith and beliefs in the United Church. This series will be of particular interest to those wishing to join the church on profession of faith. She is also starting two study groups at the church. One is on Tuesday afternoons, beginning next Tuesday, January 18 with the topic "Living Between Memory and Hope", On Tuesday evenings at 800, starting on January 25, there will he instruction in public speaking.
