Clinton News-Record, 1983-01-12, Page 5Early files 5 Years Ago ,laanuaary 3, 1978 More than 125 million people across the world saw the picture of Wat Webster of Clinton during telecast of the Tournament off Roses parade on January 2. Wat, along with the Clinton Legion Pipe Band were part of the giant Ontario Massed Legion Pipes and Drums band that played in the parade. It is believed that Wat was the olde marcher in the para 100 Years Ag January 4, 1973 The curtain rang down on the last act of the centennial year of St. James Anglican Church in Middleton last Sunday, with the dedication of two memorial plaques. The first plaque dedicated was to the memory of Fredrick Middleton, by his wife Muriel and children. His whole life was spent close to the church, literally and figuratively. The second plaque was dedicated to the men who built the house of God and to their successors who maintained it. 25 Years Ago January 2, 1958 Less than seven per cent of the taxes in Clinton remain to be collected at this date. Total tax revenue for Clinton is about $206,904.54. Only $13,960.95 remains un- collected. Also, previous to 1957, only $5,000 remains in tax arrears. Harvey Taylor received an acclamation on Monday afternoon to the position of deputy reeve of Stanley Township. This is the first time that the township has rated a deputy reeve. Mr. Taylor who has a number of years experience in council, moved into the new position without any opposition. 50 Years Ago January 6, 1933 One hears a good deal today about the dropping of salaries, especially teachers' salaries, as they are paid by all the people, and in sone eases such salaries ve' been dropped with a vengeance. Some teachers with experience have accepted positions at salaried well under $511. A few years ago every teacher of any little country school was asking and receiving $1,01111, but perhaps the teachers were no more to blame for this than the trustees, as they gave large salaries in order to take advantage of the govern- ment grant, and in some cases, so it is said, the teacher agreed to spend a part of his salary in school improvements. 75 Years Ago January 2, 1'" 1`8 Mr. F.R. Munro BA returned home of Auburn from Winnipeg last week. Frank is the only Auburn boy who ever took a Varsity degree and it is with pleasure we learn that he is still keeping up his good reputation in the West. You can't lose you fountain pen. The result of the inquiry is not yet announced, as it has to go before Mr. Hickson, Montreal. In the meantime Conductors Walmsley and Ainsley have been suspended.
