emigrated to Canada in the year 1852,
settling in the township of Stephen,
about three miles west of Exeter, at
that time a perfect wilderness with
wild animals and the red. -man of the
forest in numbers. And here and
there a log house or hut. As a young
man with strength and ambitionne
cheerfully undertook the arduous
task of cleaning away the forest in
order to develop the rich virgin soil be-
neath ;when field was added to field
and fatm to farm. In the year 1872
he was married to -Miss Catherine
Gill, of Hay township, who with him
went immediately to live on their new
home, about one mile west of Ailsa
Craig, McGillivray_ townsbip. In
polictics he was a Reformer,. always
upholding the rights• and liber-

and affectionate husband I and father beloved by all, and leaves to mourn
their loss a widow and three children.
One, son grown to manhood, having
died at, Olisprings,Enniskillen tp., two
other children having died in infancy.
As a christian his life was marked by
bis earnestness, zeal tend activity in
every good work. His death slthough
not wholly unexpected was sudden.
He had been ailing for about ayear
•previous, but no serious alarm was
felt until a few days before his. death •
when it became evident to those
around him that the end was not far
distant and at midnight on the lst of
September his spirit took its fiight.
After a brief service at. the house con-
ducted by the Rev. G. C1ohbledick, of
Parkhill, the remalus were interred in
