I, A special meeting of the county
; council was held last Wedneeday to
coneitler tendere for the erection of a
residence for the gaoler as decided
5 on at, the June session. The decision
to build was no doubt errived at be-
cause oe a, bend that $24.4 would be a.
suftleient outlay. The arebitect said
$2,,e4e was ample aud. would allow fee
lieu's. However, wben the councillors
!assembled only one tender was laid be-
fore them, and, the figures named was
$3121 They were taken aback at this,
. it was nearly SIMI more than they
had reckoned upon, and astrong effort
was made to postpone actiou until the
Decembee session so that more tendere
could be secured. A resolution to
this eifece was moved and seconded by
Lockhart and Ferguson, respectively.

Grand Bend
Bruins -111e camping season has
now fairly begun, and the various
camping grounds individually known
as London, Parkhill. Exeter and
Maple Grove are well filled with stran-
gers seeking benefit from the health-
ful atmosphere and pleasant surround-
ings of "Old Grand Bend." The season
has been one of boom, more handsome
cottages having been built than in any
previous year. They are all modern
structures, airy and calculated to af-
ford comfort instead of, as . in years
past, a number of persons being bud -
tiled into small sultry apartments.
Maple Grove and the London grounds
are the most prolific of improve-
ment, both in number of cottages and
design. One .particularly handsome
cottage is that just completed by T. H.
McCallum, of Exeter, and known as
"Pinecroft Villa." It is sieuated on
the southern bank of Oa° river, en the
London grounds, a few hundred yards
from the Lake beach, which is easy, of
access along the river's edge or by
passiug through the grove. The
building is a two storey with cottage
roof, and besides a reception room,
contains five large airy sleeping
apartments. There is a kitchen, a six
foot verandah around the building,
above which is a balcony same size,
thus affording ampleeaccommodateon
for a dozen or more people. The
grounds surrounding are clean, level
and covered with grass, while a
beautiful pine grove giyes shade the
day long, and shelter in tirne of storm.
The situation of the building is very
conamanding and, can be.seen from all
quarters, while a better view of the
lake could not be obtained, Mr.. Mc-
Call= has been highly compliment-
ed upon the site chosen for his cottage
as also upon the arahitecture of the
building, the plan and specifications
for which were prepared by his
daughter, Miss Hattie McCallum.

LIGHTNING FREAKS.—We often read
of the strange freaks of lightning but
one of the most peculiar freaks occurr-
ededuring the storm on Friday last,
on the farm of Wm. Westlake, 4th,
con. 1Jsborne A hay fork had been
a,gailtst a loft door to fasten it, the
tines of wbich being upward protrud-
ed slightly through the cracks of the
door. Lightning struck the tines,
passed down the handle, splintering iti
into small pieces. Theholt then pass-
ed through the hay to a wireon a
door of the stable below, and down
the door jam to the ground, the on-
ly damage resulting being the de-
molishing of the fork handle and door
jam of the lower (loot,. e No sign of
fire could be seen.

A SUSTAINING DIET.
These are the enervating days,when,
as somebody has said, men chop by
tbe sunstroke as if the Day of Fire
had dawned. They are fraught with
danger to people Whose systems are
poorly sustained ; and this leads us to
say, in the interest of the less robust
of oar readers, that the full effect of
Hood's Sarsaparilla is such as to sug-
gest the propriety of calling this medi-
cine something besides a blood puri-
fier and tonic, -say, a sestaining thee.
It. makes it much easier to bear the
heat, assures refreshing sleep, and will
without any doubt area much sick-
ness at this time of the year,
