dress by Wroden Holt the council
settled down to business. The usual
number of accounts, tenders and coiria
raunications were presented and sent
te the respective consinittees. The
Colonel a the Huron Regiment wrote
thanking the council for its sopplemen-
tory grant awl inviting the rnenabers
to Carling Heights where be promised
them a good time. The iovitation was
reluctantly deelhaed but the Clerk was
instructe4 to write the Colonel return-
ing thanks. In order tha4 the mem-
bers of the council may become posted
on legal points and keep in touch with
the latest amendments, it was moved,
secooded and carried that a copy of
the °uteri° Statutes for 1001 he pro-
cured fur eAcb inembeis and also one
each for Clerk and Treasurer,
The most important cpfestion
is-
usse by the coulacil was that of the
equalizatioo of the assessment of the
noinaty which has remained the same
veal years. It was set when
what were called the back townships
bad not, developed so rapidly as those
in the front. But of late years while
the vetoes in the "front" have remain-

valuation of Godetich township is held

biglier than that of the township as-
sessor, the Increase in Morris is only
about two per cent° In order to open
up the whole matter Councillor Can-
telon moved, ROCOnded by Councillor
Coan011Y, that the valuation a ewe-
ricti township be lowered two dollars
per acre The motion did not secure a
majority.
Last year the council granted one
hundred dollars to help entertain the

Cioderich but this year they refused a

council in favor of a grant of $100 to
nesiat in entertaining the Huron Old
Boys.
Councillor Torrance fathered this ex-
ceileut motion which was unanimously
adopted:
That the Treasurer be asked to
draw the attention of county eon -

that they are expected to see that

Residents of Colborne and Goderich
townships living on or adjaceut to the
Maitland concession, north, bave long
felt the want of abridge over theMait-

petition Was presented asking the
cOuncil to take action in the matter.
The following were among the rate-
payers present to back up the big
petition presented Sellvrne Messrs.

others. The conneil granted the re-
quest of the petitioners so far as to in-
struct the engineer to visit the spot

report upon the need of a bridge there
and the probable cost. Councillor

School sections 3 and 4, .Goderich
Township, brought out a dispute re-
- gardings a couple of lots comprising
the John Evans estate. It appears
that they originally belong to No. 3,
but years ago the assesser placed them
in No. 4, Sumnierhill, his children at-
tending that school. The transfer was
not made according to the forms pro-
vaded but there they remained. The
school tax too upon the disputed lots
is small, and only amounting to about
two dollars per year, but the respective
sections contend for their rights in the

After much discussion, in which Dr. Stationery, Printing, etc.
Chamberlain came up from Toronto to miseenanenas
participate, it, was decided to build a
new residence for the gaoler, the coun-
cil stipulating that the cost must not
exceed $2250. Plans and specifications
are to be prepared luta ee hen tenders

of the council will be called to say to
whom the contract shall be awarded,
nthe task being too 'gigantic, apparent-

Architects fees, special meetinge, etc.,
•etc., will condeee to make the gaoler's
residence a rather expensive one.
The business of the session having
° been concluded the council adjourned
to meet again 013 the first Teeeday in
