Mrs. White Committed For Trial.
Brantford, Ont., May 17. — The
witnesses in the White murder case
yesterday were the same as at the
coroner's inquest, excepting Prof. El-
lis, Government analyst, who testi-
fied to finding three-eighths of a
grain of strychnine in the stomach
of deceased, Charles White. This
showed there was more than this in
the stomach before death took place.
He had not yet analyzed the coating
gf the stomach. The amount found
in the stomach would not cause
the death of Mr. White. Strychnine
was used in fluid, or pill form, for a
tonic. L. P. Heyd, for the defendant,
Mrs. White, addressed the court at
some length, taking up the evidence
from beginning to end, submitting

MORAL OBLIGATION,
On this moral obligation Mr. Brock
tittered. a scathing criticism of the
shuffling of the Minister. The Im-
pression left on his mind was that the
Department of Reilways and 0,unaals
required a good deal more looking af-
ter at the hands of Mr. 13l -tie's col
leagues than It received. The sort of
thing that had been exhibited before
that house would not be tolerated in
anybusiness establishment. The
Minister of Railways had made a;n
ahselute misstatement of the case,
Tall; of morel obligation there was an
absolute contraet_pledging the honor
of the country. When once the gov-
ernment of the country pledged itself
by an order in council they were bound
by every principle of honor to carry
out its provisions. "I call," said Mr.
Broelc, "the Minister of Railways and
Cenals to look this matter carefully
and make such a statement that he
will not be ashamed of."
BL IR CO\eateXaD.
Mr. liaggart 'ehaaxgged the Minister
of Railways with saying in the season
of 1900 that he was negotiating , with
two companies for the manufacture of
steel mils, but when it came to acting
dealing with one ; this Mr. Blair stout
ly denied, whereupon. Mr. Ragged
produced the .Hansard, and lead out
Air. Blair's own word : "We have been
asked by two different parties that
contemplate establishing companies
for the manufacture of steel rails in
Canada to make It a condition that
companies reeeivingsnbsidies from the
government shall buy their rails in
Canada."' This triumphant answer to
Mr. Blair was received with great
cheering froru the opposition. When
Mr. Blair began to try to wiggle out
of the position and explain away his
own words, it was too much for Mr,
Cochrane, who eprang to his feet and
said : "To see a Minister of the Crown
trying` to crawl out of statements be
made in this house."
Mr. Blair. -The honorable gentle-
man could he more dignified.
Mr. Coehraue,—rind you could be
more honest.
ens BELL eneurIXONE COMPANY.
The people have scored a victory
over the Bell Telephone Company
through the Senate. In the commit-
tee the Company gained a point and
bad an rmendnent placed in the bill
greatly to its advantage. But Senator
Miller and the majority of the Senate
voted down the amendment and were
prepared to vote amendments to the
hill which would surely place the rates
under the control of the Governor
General in Council. In the act of 1892
there is a clause which enacts this bat
as no machinery is provided for carry-
ing it oat it is a dead letter. Miller's
amendment would have given a pri-
vate person the power to recover any
charge in excessof rates fixed by the
Governor General in Council. Re was
sure to have a majority. The Bell
Telephone Company therefore retired
from the contest and withdrew the
bill. There could not he a better in-
stance of the usefulness of a body like
the Senate independent of political
leaders and not having voters or elec-
tions to face.
RAILWAY SUBSIDIES.
The Railway Subsidies amount to
$3,462,472.00. Since the present gov-
ernment came into power whose mem-
bers used to denounce subsidies, there
have been exclusive of the present
year $18,116,175 voted as bonuses to
railways. This year $3,462,472, of
which $1,689,600 are a revote and
$1,772,872 are new. subsidies. Thus
this government .has voted the net
sum ot$19,880,047. • The saabsidies add-
ed to the other expenditures will make
the expenditure for 1901-2 over $61,000,-
000. This is portentous.

past eight years my life has been one
of constant misery. My nervous sys-
tem was sh•ttt.ered. and I was mitre.
ed to a mete physical wreck. My ;;
trouble began in one of the ailments
that so frequently afflict my sex. I
was irritable and diseourage2l all the
time, and life did not seem worth ea --
living. For seven years I was under
treatment by doctors. I even went
to Boston and entered, a hospital
where I remained for some time. f
While there the treatment temperer -I
Hy benefited me, but soon my condi-
tion was worse than ever. Finally
my nervous trouble took the form of
spasms which caused more suffering
than words can tell. When thus at-
tacked I felt as though I was literal-
ly being torn apart. I would fro-
quen tly become unconscious and some -
tunes would remain in that condition ,
for half an hour. I have., sometimes
had as many as six of these spasms
in a week, and no one who has not
similarly suffered eau imagine the
tared, wornout, depressed feeling
which follow ed. Doctors seemed ut-
terly unable to do anything for ole, t
and those years of misery can never
be forgotten. Then i began taking
Dr. Williams' Pink Pills, and in a
short while found there helpiug me.
Then another doctor told me he could
cure ane. I stopped taking the pills,
and like the dog in the fable, while
grasping at the shadow I lost the
substance. I was soon in as wretched
'condition as ever. The pills were the
only thing that had ever helped inc
and I determined to begin them again.
Tconeinued to take them for nearly
nine months the troubleradually but
surely leaving me, until Iain now in
almost (perfect health and fully releas-
ed from what I at one time thought
would prove a life of almost constant,
misery. I cannot praise Dr. Williams'
Pink Pills too highly, nor can I too
strongly urge those who are ailing to
test their wonderful health restoring
virtues."
In thousands and thousands of
eases it has been proved that Dr.
Williams' Pine Pills are the greatest
blood builder and nerve restorer med-
ical science has yet discovered.
The pills act speedily and directly up-
on the blood and the nerves, and thus
reach the root of the trouble, effect-
ing thorough and permanent cures.
Other medicines merely act upon the
semptoms, and when the patient
ceases using them they soon reiapae
into a condition as bad as before,
There is no trouble due to poor blood
or weak nerves which these pills will
not cure. Those who are sick or ail-
ing are urged to give this medicine a
fair trial, and are cautioned against
the numerous irritations which some
dealers offer, The genuine pills al-
ways bear the full name "Dr. Wil-
liams' Pink Pills for Pale People" on
the wrapper.around every box.
•' THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION.
The session is now practically oyer
and having during the session closely
observed Mr. Borden, the Leader of
the opposition, I can say with author-
ity that he bas filled the biil. He, -has
led his party with great judgment' and
tact. Oomparatively new to politics,
absolutely new to the respousible posi-
tion of leader.he has wade no mistakes.

He is always even when hitting bard

which is of a very high order. I be-

the people to impress thein as deeply,

•' THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION.
The session is now practically oyer
and having during the session closely
observed Mr. Borden, the Leader of
the opposition, I can say with author-
ity that he bas filled the biil. He, -has
led his party with great judgment' and
tact. Oomparatively new to politics,
absolutely new to the respousible posi-
tion of leader.he has wade no mistakes.
}Ie: has held thereins with alight bet
firm hand. In debate he is more than
amatch for any man on the other side.
He is always even when hitting bard
courteous and respecting himself, he
challenges: the'respect of all. His
readiness is equal to his logical power
which is of a very high order. I be-
lieve he has only to become known to
the people to impress thein as deeply,
as he has•impressed the Hoose.

foot iu it. Mr.'Haggart attacked not
the vote but the principle of action,
end Laurier said that if any province

son able" it would be considered.' What
is this but an invitation ?
A MINT FOR CANADA.
One of the most interesting things
this session, was before the house yes-
terday, the resolution to grant 875,000
't year to establish a branch of the
Royal Mint in Canada. Observe that
it is a branch of Royal Mint. The
reason for this is that we shall be able
to make here Imperial as well as Can-
adian coin, that is, gold coins not of
