gEAT"' OP CAPTAIN GEORGE S.
rP. — A familiar figure on the
streets, and one of the most highly es
teemed citizens of Exeter, has passed
to his reward. The news of his death
on Friday morning, May 3, was receiv-
ed with surprise, as the day previous
• was around as usual, while on Wed
day he was at his post, as Librarian
the Public Library, and was feeling
=omewh.Lt improved, For the past
year Mr. Kemp had been failing from
the effects of a :kidney trouble, but
with the advent of spring appeared
much improved in health, and his
death was quite unexpected. Captain
George S. Kemp was born in Penryn,
Cornwall, England, on the 9th Ja•n'y,
1838. His father was the Rev'd George
Kemp, rector of St. Allan's, Cornwall.
Deceased was educated at :the Clergy
school, London, and went to Sea at
the age of 18, working his own way up.
in the profession, until he reached the.
highest position—that of Captain in
the Merchant's service. He spent sev-
eral of the earlier years of his sea -far
ing life in vessels trading between Lon-
don and China and Japan, and after-
wards he had command of a Steam-
ship plying between Bristol and Bor-
deaux. He came to Canada in the
year 1875, and was married same year
to his surviving wife. :.Mr Kemp open-
ed a store in Exeter in 1878, in which
be did a successful business, until he
moved to flarnilton to reside. A few
years subsequently he removed. to
Exeter, and has since resided' here.
Deceased was widely known, having
been Librarian of the Public Library
