is the possessor of a trottlete horse
with a record. He has made a wager
of $2,1 with Mr. Scott that his horse
can trnta mile in three minutes, along
a country road, and draw a road wag-
gon. He has a week in which to ac-
complish the feats and can try as often
as he pleases. There is a good deal of
interest centered in this trial of speed.

of near Varna, has purchased Mr. Ben -
net's. cottage on Oxford street, now oc-
cupied by John Pope, and intends most -
pig to Hensall.-Mr. Pfeffer and fam-

Youngblut's.--Miss Robert, of Den-
field, is visiting her grandmother, Mrs.
Reith.-Elarvest Home services will be
held in St. Paul's church on Sunday,
80th Sept. Dr. Crawford, of London,
will conduct service at 11 and 7 o'clock.
The church will be suitably decorated
for the occasion. Mrs. Seeds, who was
visiting her friends returned home to
Strathroy on Monday, accompanied by
her sister, Mrs. James MeArthur, who
will visit there for a short time. -Thos
Welsh has had his residence repainted

Moore has written, to his parents from
Minuesota, stating that he is well
pleased with his situatiore-Rev. W. J

tion, arid preached in his own pulpit

ligence a the death of his daughter -a
Mrs. Weber -in Galveston, Tex., shems
and her husband being victiof the

''.:BRIEPS.-Thos Deihl and bride, of
Pigeon, are visiting friends in and
around Ditsbwood. Mr. Deihl formee-
ly resided in Zurich, where his father
ran a blacksmith shop. His wife was
a Miss Schluchter, of Pigeon, grand-
daughter of the late Jacob Schluchter,
of Zurich. -Win. Wing, of the Goshen
Line, Ray, died on Saturday, at the
age of 76 years. He was one of the
pioneer settlers and was highly respec-
ted. He had been ill for some time
with the infirmities of old age. He was
the father of H. Wing, of Shipka, and
leaves a widow (his second wife), four
sons and two daughters to mourn his
demise. On Tuesday, his daughter,
Mrs. Sweitzer, of Sebringville, former-
ly Mrs. Gray, of Hay township also
passed away. She had been attending
her father through his illness, and her
system becoming impaired, she took
suddenl3r111. She leaves a husband
and family. The remains of father
and daughter were interred in the
Branson line cemetery. -Andrew Des-
jardens, of Grand Bend, passed away
on Thursday last in the 80th year of
/his age. He had been sick for some
time of dropsy, Of French extraction
he came to this country at an early age
' and settled near the Bend, where he
raised. a large family, and amassed a
good inheritance. His first wife died
some years ago, when he married Mrs.
Hiller, then of Exeter, now of Califor-
nia. He leaves a number a grown up
children to survive. Deceased was wide-
ly known and much respected.- The
bush fires, which during the past week
have done much damage to the wood-
lands, have been squelched somewhat
by the recent rains. -Fred Schuttler
returned on Monday from Buffalo,and
will spend a few days visiting friends
here. -john Voelker, the hustling ime
plement agent, received large consign-
ments of plows on Monday. He can
satisfy the most exacting.-Mrs.Snider
of Berlin, who has been visiting Mrs.
Fried, returned home Tuesday.- A
number from this vicinty attended the
Exeter Fair. It was among the best
of the season, barring London or To-
ronto. -Dr. McLaughlin exhibited his
driver at Exeter fair. - The flax crop
has been threshed. The yield this sea-
son has been good; and with the big
prices realized, the dealers should re -
coyer what they lost in previous
years.

Johnston was surprised to find a large
number of his former pupils in No. 2,
Hay, awaiting his coining. The rea-
son of their coming was soon made
manifest. When all was seated Mr.
Johnston was presented with the fol-
lowing address, a fountain pen and
two beautiful volumes, one a large col-
lection of views from the Holy Land.
Mr. Joheston made a -feeling, and snit -
able reply. A few beiges were then
spent in pleasant games and other
amusements. The following is the ad-
dress.

Fair last week and report it not up to
their expectations, but they found
Exeter fair this week alright. -Dr.
and Mrs. Rivers spent Wednesday last
in London and St. Thomas. In the
latter city they attended the wedding
of Aliss Ward, cousin of Mrs. Rivers. -
Wm. Lewis, sr., has placed an acety-
lene gas plant in his residence which
will add meetly to his comfort and
convenience if it works satisfactorily.
T. H. Holtzman is placing one in his
tailoring establishment this week. -
Mr. and Mts. Thos. Treyethick drove
to London, on Saturday last, and spent
fevs days with friends in the city. -
There is an epidemic of colds and
dysentery prevalent in our raidst.
