.A. little ebild met with an accident
this morning which was fortunately
prevented from proving fatal, says
the Woodsteck Seetinel-Review of
.August 1. A lady with a child in her
arms was standing on the platform of
one of the coaches of the Stratford
train when it was pulling in town, and
as it reached Richards' Soap Works,
the train slowed up,. according to its
usnal cestont. The Jolt threw the lady
aga.inst the iron protection at the 'end
of the platform, ausing her to drop
the baby from her arms. It fell down
between the cars and luckily fell be-
tween the tracns and remained there
until the train had passed over. Its
screams were heard by some employes
of the soap works, who shouted to the
train men. The train was stopped
and the child picked up. It was un-
hurt except for a few bruises and a
good shaking up, but its escape was
wonderful.

Bad Fishery Outlook.
St. John's, Nfld., Aug. S. -The fish-
ery outlook is the, rnost unfavorable
known here in recent years. Owing
to the ice blockade off the Labrador
coast, the catch of cod there shows
a decided decrease, which it will be
impossible to offset during the re-
mainder of the season. The fishery
around the Newfoundland coast is
also backward, and the prospect of
even an average catch is equally
hopeless. The. situation presages
much distress during the coming au-
tuma and winter.' •
