DEATH OF MRS. GARDINER. -On Fri-
day last Janet Gardiner, relict of the
late Robert Gardinenpassedawaysafter
a brief illness, at the age of 76 years.
Deceased was one of the pioneer sett-
lers, and was held in high esteem. Mr
Gardiner died several years ago. Her
remains were interred in Roy's ceme-
tery on Monday.

The other day Mr Wallis in making a.
shipment or bogs had. the misfOrtune
to lose 20 of them. Mr Wallis, while
en route to Toronto, heard of a dealer
losing this large number of swiue, and
freely expressed his sympathy for the
unfortunate gentleman, but imagine
his chagrin on reaching the city to
find that he himself was the unlucky
person. Mr Wallis freely admits that
his loss will take away the profit of a
double-decleenbut nothing daunted, be

Mrs Hutchinson's little boy was lean-
ing against the upstair window when
the screen gave way and the little fel-
low fell out to the ground. He might
have been killed but at last accounts
he was doing nicely. -Al the quarter-
ly official meeting of the Methodist
chiareh the reports were read and found
very satisfactory. The membersbip is
over 500 and the receipts in advance of
any previous year. -.-The sumnser meet-
ing of the South Perth Farmer's Insti-
tute will be held in Mitchell on Tues-
day, June 12, when an interesting pro-
gram will be given. -The Whyte Pack-
ing Company made another shipment
of pork to the Old Country market on

Taylor, daughter of Rev W Taylor, of
St. Marys, was in town on a visit with
Miss Davis. -Capt. Money has received
orders to have his warriors ready to go
to London on June 5th. Mitcbell com-
pany should show up well as the mili-
tary spirit runs high. ---Fred Neal, car-
penter, who worked in Davie & Eizer-
rnan's planing mill for some years, has
gone to Little Current, Manitoulin
Island, where he has got a good, posi-
tion. -David Sykes, a young Mail em-
ployed by William Graham, ha,d a nar-
row escape from being killed. on Satur-
day afternoon while working on the
roof of Mr. Burritns knitting factory.
He was helping to strip the old shingles
off, and stepping on some loose ones
right at the top of the building close
to the ridgeboard, he lost his footing
and came down bead first, to the edge
of the building, it distance of: sixteen
feet, and then fell twenty feet to the
ground. He must have turned a som-
ersault, as he came down feet first,
lighting on a packing box, and receiv-
ing a deep gash in the calf of his leg.
He was immediately taken to Dr.
Armstrong's office, where it was fouucl
necessary to put fourteen stitches in
the wound, The young man was
also pretty badly shaken up and will
feel sore for some de ys.----Sueday was
League anniversary day in the Metho-

and. he chose his text from Esther 1 :
14. He is a very distinct and fluent
speaker and his eermon was both help-
ful and 'interesting to all present. In
the evening Mr. Brown took for his
text the 110th Psalm, and the last
clause of the 3rd verse, "Thou hest the
dew of my youth." His talk was most-
ly to the young people of the congre-
gatiou. He said theta was no time
like youth in which to start and work.

Paisley, or Clinton, was in town on
Thursday and Friday, acting as valet-
ator for Mr. Cantelon in the purchase
of A. A. Goetz's hotel effects. A
gentleman. from Stratford and F, C.
MeDoneli assisted. Mr. Cantelon took
possession Saturday last, and is well
pleased with his business prospects,
and vvith the village, Mr. Cantelon
and family come highly recommended.

I W. Marne, late Postmaster of Bruce -
field. On Sunday Rev, R. Milyard, of
Exeter, preached anniversary sermons
in the Methodist church. The congre-
gations were large at both services,
and the sermons were highly interest-
ing and instructive. The anniversary
tea will be served on Thursday even-
ing. A splendid program has also
been prepared for the occasion --D.
Cantelon, of Clinton, was in toevn on
Mouclay.-Messrs. Willis & Shepherd
made a large' shipment of Logs on
Monday.' Rev. Mr. Craig, of Clinton,
preached. quite acceptably in St. Penns

Cook last -week purchased a driving
horse from T. Murdock. Ile drove it
to the mill on Saturday, where it took
fright and ran away. Ti. ran through
Urquhart's sawmill yard and smashed
the buggy beyond recognition.

The damaged fountain, on tlae Square
has been reraoved and the basin filled
in. -On May 16 in DetroitJudge Dono-
van granted a divorce to Mrs. Mary
Jane Clark and. gave her $10,000 ali-
inony. The couple are people well
along in years, and they have lived to-
gether for nearly it quarter of a cen-
tury. They formerly lived in Gonerich
Ont. It was there that the common
law marriage was contracted. Less
then a year ago Mr. Clark teased. to
support, his wife and children media. cer
married a Woman in Buffalo. There
was some little discussion about the
almoner. It cleveloped by the testi-
mony Mat Clark owned the, whole of
or interests in boats in the Canadian
trade between Goderich and Buffalo,
owned 10 or 12 farms ia Canada, owned
it bicycle factory and owned it woolen
mill in Bninelo. The Son-in-law placed

$200,000. -An old citizen, Sainnel Me-
eaw, died rather seddenly Friday
morning. He had been suffering from
a complaint that could not be eased
without an operation, which was per -
foamed. Thursday afternoon. Deceas.

and soon quietly passed away. The
remains were conveyed to Seaforth

occurred in Goldthorpe's saw mill,
township of Ash Reid, Saturday. Car-
penter, a mill hand, was caught be- the
foot and thrown on a large cireelar
saw, and was totally cut to pieces. ft

leaves a young wife. -Lew is Elliott,
one of our oldest and best knovve cit-
izens, died during Sunday night after
a few weeks' illness, and was buried by

Noble, to Victoria Hospital, London,
on Monday and on the following Fri-
day he underwent an operation for ap-
pendicitis. At the last report be was
doing as well as could. be expected. -
Frank Baker is dangerously ill with
typhoid fever. -Mr Lamotte and fam-
ily, of Strathroy, moved into their
summer cottage here on Monday. -
The carpenters are busy erecting Rich
Hamilton's new house, anclewhen com-
pleted he will have a beautiful resi-
dence. -Mr Spackmae has rented leis
dining -hall to Mr Cornell, of Parkhill.
