so much our Thursday evening band
. concerts should make some effort to
provide it band 'stand for this very
poplar organizetion. To play on the
street for an hoar or. two with no rest
is quite a, task, not taking into consid-
-eration what dangers the bandsmen
shave to contend with from passing
horses, which, are generally out in
-plenty on each and every concert
night. -George Young, oue of our

after an illness lasting for several
-weeks. Deceased was in his 78th year,
, many ofwhich ha,d been spent in St

Vice, machinist here, has lately devis-
ed and completed a new inYention that
is causing considerable comment from
all who see K. The device is to be
used as it signal at all railway cross -
legs, which are in any manner danger-
, OM to the travelling public. The in-
vention is so itrranged that a distance
• of over half e mile of a 'crossing an
alarm is set going by the front wheels
of the engine passing (were, small ups
right rod close to one of the rails. The
• gong keeps on ringing until the engine
approaches the ,crossing, when it
•• A
passes over a second rod, which causes
the bell to cease ringing. The other
wheels of the train, while passing over
the small upright rod, rewind the me-
chinery near the ercssing, leaving ev-
erything ready for other trains coming
in the same direction. Trains going
in the opposite direction will not effect
the :mechanism of the invention, as
two of these signals have to be erected
at each crossing to provide safety,
when the trains pass on the same
track each way. To provide for per-
sons who are deaf, or who cannot hear
well, a small horizontal board is caus-
ed to swing over the road at the cross-
ing, so that they, too, can learn that
a train is a,pproas.hing.-Geo Dormer,
