Hits Newspapers Hard.
The following from that strong Lib.
oral organ, the Sinacoe Reformer,
draws attention to a recent ebange.
Which, along with the imposition of
postage, bears heavily upon the news-
paper business in Canada, and to meet
which tbe newspaper cannot avoid
laying it on their patrons in some
form, The Reformer says:
"Some time sinee what was known
els the paper combine in Canada got
out of gear, and there has been in coo -
sequence keen competition in the sell-
ing of news print ever since. The re-
sult was that the price from time to
time has been veduced, We have
never got news print in Canada as
cheap as they have had it ite the 'United
States, although our facilities for mak-
ing the paper and our closeness to the
source of raw material should make it
possible for paper to be produced in
Canada as -cheap as any other place in
the world. The other day, however,
our Canadian manufacturers, follow-
ing the Iead of all the other industries
of the country, got together and
patched up their differences. One of
the first things they did was to decide
to advance the price of printing paper
25 per cent. It is true, of course, that
paper stock has advanced in price, and
that a raise was to be expected and
was justifiable, but, no such consider-
able increase in price was necessary to
protect the makers. It is a eleer case
of a combine for the purpose of taking
money out of the. pockets of the news-
paper proprietors of Canada. The
newspaper business is a peculiar one.
The price at which nearly all the pa-
pers in ehe country sell, is fixed and.
cannot be raised and lowered as can
the retail price of sugar, so that any
raise made by the producer can be re-
imbursed to the middle ma,n by a cor-
responding raise to the coesurner. A.
raise of 25 per cent. on the mite of
paper does not mean that we can raise
the price- of the Simcoe Reformer 25
cents a year. The melee of 25. per cent.
simply means that we must pay each
year to the xnakers of paper about
$250 more than we have been paying
them. That $250 will come out of our
pocket, and proportionate sums will
come from the pockets of every other
newspaper proprietor in the Dominion.
We believe that the Dominion Gov-
ernment when they revised the tariff,
took power to place, by order -in -coun-
cil, upon the free list, any article that
was made the subject of a Canadian
combine. Here surely is a case in
point, and if the hesvspeper men in
Canada have one-half the political in-
fluence they sometimes prate about,
newspapers should go on the free list
within the next few days. Let as
watch and see whether the makers
combine or the publishers have the
bigger pull with the Ottawa Cabinet,"

was a crank on the subject of fire, and
when be tolled around with the Exam-

hobby, so she prompted her scalars as
to the answer they should give when
he arose to propound his accustomed
inquiry.

this particular trustee, pet -liens from a

addresses, rose and said: -

In these days of imitations it is well for
everyone to be careful what be buys.
Especially is this necessary When a matter -
of health Is involved.
There are so many imitations of Doan's
Kidney Pills on the market--sorno of them
absolutely worthless -that we ask you to -
be particular to see -that the full name and
the trade mark of the Maple Leaf are on -
every box you buy. Without this you are
not getting the original Kidriey Pill, which
has cured so many severe cases of kidney
complaint in the United States, Australia
and England, as well as here in Canada.
