JAMES ST. Cannon A NNIVERSARY.-
The anniversary of James st. church
was celebrated on Sunday and Monday
with the usual festivities. On Sunday
two excellent sermons were predehed
by Rey. G. W. Henderson, of St.
Marys, in an eloquentand impressive
manner, to overflowing congregations,
while the excellent church -choir ren-
dered suitable music, including solos
and duetts by members of that organ-
ization. On Monday the attendance
at the atatmal tea was very large,
but the good ladies were equal to the
oceasion, and catered to the inner man
in befitting style, fully sustaining their
reputation as liberal providers. The
platform meeting was organized about
8.30,with the pastor Rev. C. W. Brown
as chairman.. Timely addresses were
given by Rev. Henderson, of St.
Marys, Rev. Ten Eyck, Milyard and
Martin, Exeter, and Rev. Collins, An -
caster. These were interspersed, with
music, song and recitation by the
church choinassisted by Mrs. A. Stew -
wart, and. Miss G. Hicks, while elev.
idr. Collins sang two selections and
gave an interesting recitation. The
'affair throughout was the most success-
ful tea meetingin thehistory of the
church, the receipts, including'Sunday
services'and•social on Tuesday evening
amounting to $200.
FIRE. -At an early hour on Sunday
morning, presumably three o'clock,
fire broke oat in the Electric Power
Houseowned by TremaineandSnelaand
before noticed the entire building Was
almost gutted, nothing having been
saved. The building was formerly
owned by the Verity Plow Works Co.,
and used as a store -house for plows,
castings, etc., and was necessarily
strong, built with thick walls, large
timbers and irois roof. The construc-
tion ot the building confined the fore
of the flames within the walls and
thus prevented the Metropolitan hotel
and J. P. Ross' store, across the street,
from igniting. Tbe intense heat, how-
ever, cracked J. P. Ross' fine plate
glass fron t,as well as alarge-nurnber of
windows in the hotel. The wind was
also in a favorable direction for the
buildings close by, and the roofs being
covered with an icy surface prevented
the sparks from doing any damage.
A strong wind fanned the flames, • and
it was not until everything inflamma-
ble was destroyed that the fire was
checked, having gained great head-
way. About nine o'clock the roof
came in and the heavy walls fell, leav-
ing the large building an almost total
wreck. The premises were used as a
power house for the Electric Light
Go, and an office and warehouse
for Alex. M. Tait, founder. The Elec-
trie Light. Co. bad but two years ago
installed a new plant at a cost of over
$7,900, which with the building makes
the loss over $8,000, on which is an in-
surance of $4,000. Mr. Tait's loss will
be $600 with no insurance. Mr. Mat-
thenaan, of Brantford, lost $150 worth
o1. tool's. The origin of the fire is a
mystery, but is supposed to have
_cauget from the furnace • or a heated
journal, everything having been left in
the usual good order by the electrician
about one o'clock. The boiler, which
was bricked in, is uninjured. We learn
that the Company 'will rebuild at once,
and in order that the town may not
experience any prolonged inconveni-
ence from loss of the Tights, it is pro-
posed to plaee dynamos in some fac-
tory and connect , the various circuits
at once. '
William Brown, an aged and res-
pected ,fitrmer of Cramalle, near Col-
borne, while walking on the -track
Sunday morning, was struck by a
passing train and instantly killed.
The remains were brought to Colborne
station foe identification, after which
they were taken to the residence of his
brother. Mr. Brown had lived :lone
on his farin on the lake shore for a
nuinbev of years. He leaves leo fainily.
