ing another period of prosperity, the
work on the big hotel, which was sus-
pended for a year being again •under
way. The bricklayers are now at the
-third storey and if the funds hold „put
may yet be roofed, It is understood
' that Mr. .Valen, proprietor of the
Queen's Rotel, Montreal, is now sup-
plying the funds and is to send up
-$5,000 a month. A cheque for
the second installment arrived the
other day aeid Monsieur Contine
was in Chatham last week arrang-
ing for the cashing of it. Mr. Valen
is said to be an Oki bachelor with
plenty of money. Mr. Campbell of
Hay township, who financed Clontine
in his operations up to a few mouths
ago, expresses confidence in the ability
of the projecture to make the City a
success. He has advanced, it is said,
over 820,000, and as a security has a
_first mortgage :upon the site, so that
he is naturally anxious to see building
operations continue. The more brick
arid morter piled up there the better
prospect be has of getting his money
back.
James Sears, carpenter at the Verity
Plow Co.'s works, I3rantford, while
running a planer,. the knives struck a
knot in the wood, giving his hand a
sudden jerk and drawing the four fin-
gers of his left hand in, completely

One day last week, John Conery, of
Wingliam, was working with a large
iron wreuch. By some means he sus-
tained a broken rib.
Mrs. Elcoat, sr., of Tackersioith, left
on Tuesday for Los Angeles, Cal. She
has a son residing in that state and
intends tospend tl3e winter there.
john Hawkehavv, formerly of Sea -
forth, died at the Clinton. House of Re.
fuge the other day, at the age of 61
years, and WaS interred at Exeter.

A young man named Wesley Chit -
tick, of Blyth, was found dead in his

Winnipeg, haying been asphyxiated
by gas. ,
Mr. Thos. Hewett, of Auburn, ,left
last week •for Neepawa, Manitoba,
where he will join two of his brothers
who are engaged in business there.
He intends remaining at Neepawa. •
The death of Mrs. 'Villiers wife of Al-
fred Miller, occurred at Clinton on
Wedneede,y night from convulsions.
She leayes four small children, and
general sympathy goes to the husband.
Farm property in the vicinity of
Kippen still keeps changing hands.
Jas. Mulholland has disposed of his
fine 100 -acre farm to J. Deitz, who has
lately returned from Manitoba. The
price given is $0,800. • •'
Edward Tebbutt formerly of Gode-
rich township, has just sold his five
acre orange grove, which is within two
miles of the city of Redlands, Cal., for
the sum of $8,250. The trees are eight
years old.
The Baptist church, Clinton, was the
scene of a quiet wedding On Tuesday,
when Rev. J. T. Murdock united in
the holy 'bonds of matrimOny, Miss
Mary Gill, of Clinton, and J. J. Neil,
of Stratford.
Mr. French, Hie Manager of the Hur-
on county house of refuge, has found
it necessary, to prohibit the receiy-
ing by inmates of the •house of de-
licacies from generous friends, because
of the jealously which it causes.

The four-year-old son of F. H. Ker-
ney, barber, of Wingham'had his
band badly bitten by a dog, belonging
to Mr. Frank Patersonerecently. This
is the third case of the kind reported
in Western Ontario within a week.
The law states that, parties enclosing
stray animals after 48 hours must ad-
vertise SatCle and notify the Clerk of
the municipality of his proceeding.
Neglect to do so leaves one liable to a
heavy penalty. Put your ad. in the

During the past year Hullett town-
ship had 4 cases of typhoid, 3 cases of
scarlatina, 2 of tuberculosis, and 1 of
diphtheria; anti toxine was used and all
recovered. The number of deaths from
all causes reported to the division reg-
istrar, during the year was 23.
The new Presbyterian church Varna,
is a nice structure. The church is a
neat building, it being of white brick,
and is 40 by 20 feet. • The church was
opened last week. With the subscrip-
tions, collections and receipts of the
opening services, there is only '$100 in-
debtedness lefb.
Mr. William Schnock, Oranbrook,
Grey township,who has been travelling
throiigh the State of Michigan for the
past week or so looking for land, with
a view to buying, has come home
quite satisfied to remain in Grey town-
ship, as the prospects of a home in
Michigan would not suit him.
• John Durst, a former resident of
Colborne township, but for the last
eight or ten years a resident of Buf-
falo, died in that city onMonday, Nov.
2011, where he underwent an operation
for appendicitis. Ile had been carry-
ing onbusiness as undertaker. The re-
mains were brought to Colborne ceme-
tery on Thursday.
Peter Scott, of the 9t1 con. Onlross,
has a novel method of shelling, corn.
He places a heavy oak plank over two
bareels. Through this plenk • there
are two boles respectively. 1 inch and
11 inches in diameter, He puts the
small end of the cob in one of these
holes, according to its size, and drives
the cob through with the hammer.
Mr. Scott says it works like a charm.
The two-year-old child of Mr. S.
'Gilchrist of Villogham had a narrow
escape on •Friday veiling last. The
little tot clim be.d upon the teble and
• got a bottle which contained carbolic
acid. Took the ()elk ont and attempted
to drink the contents. Only a small
amount of the poison tooched the
child's face and it suddenly took the
bottle from itis month. The child escap-
ed with a small burn.
O Ern Copp, well-known as a former
resident of Clinton, is now living at
St,- Thomas, Dak., where be has en-
tered suit for divorce against b is wife

deserted his wife, leaving her to the

At a joint meeting of the boards of
Ontario and Rattenbury St, chureheS,
Clinton, on Tuesday evening, it was
decided that the proposed union church
should be built on neutral ground,both

John A. Cudmore, of Park River,
Dakota, is visiting her uncle, W. Cud -
more. He has been employed with
Joseph Cudmore, a former resident of
Tiackersmith, whd is now one of the
wealthy land owners, of that extensive
state.
, On Saturday, Nov. 18 a barn on the
old Emerson farm, 2nd con., Hallett
was burned down. The farm is own-
ed. by E. Brickenden, but no one re-
sides me the place. . There were 250
bushels of colts and some other grain
in the barn together • with a cultiva-
tor. • •
The other day Mrs. W. Wheatley of
Clinton, noticed their little dog play-
ing with something in the yard, and
when she went out to see what the
dog had, she was surprised to find it
was a $5 bill, which Mr. Wheatley
thinks he dropped in paying out
money.
Miss Maud Wiltsie, (daughter of
Harrison Wiltsie,) who has been teach-
ing in S. S. No. 2, Grey, has been
re-engaged for 1900 at an increase of
$30 a year salary. • W. Geiger, has
been engaged for No. 0, S. S., Hay,
tor 1900. Miss Stevenson, (daughter
of John Stevenson.,) bas been re-en-
gaged as assistant for Hensall public
School.

of Mr. Edmond Spasee.., lornierly a
liveryman of St. Marys. It sayS'e
"For about 13 year Mx.. Sparrow was
one et our business men, but some six
months ago sold out to fulfill an en-
gagement with his brother-in-law, Mr.
• McRoberts, in Illinois, also a former
St. Marys man. He was taken ill with
typhoid fever and died within three
weeks. Mr. Sparrow was married in
1872 to Miss RebeccaMeRoberts, sister
of Mr. Jerry McRoberts, formerly of
St. Marys, who with two children sur-
vive him."
