WHY IS MYOPIA SO COMMON?
According to a certain number of
German ophthalmologists, the use of
glazed paper has a prejudicial effect
upon the eyesight- There lies the
cause, they say, of the continuous in-
crease of anyopla during the last fifty
years
Formerly a dull, grayish paper of
coarse texture was used. Now the
paper has a smooth, brilliant surface,
with luminous reflections that were
• absent from the rough surface of the
old paper. In old books' a soft light
easity brought out in relief the char-
aicters, which were printed in. heavier,
blacker type. Now, with the glazed
surface Lim light is all the more re-
flected, because the- characters them-
selves are finer and less pronounced,
thus giving rise to a playl of light and
shade that is ,most fatiguing to the
eyes. To prove this it suffices to
take an old edition of the last century,
and one of the modern magazines
printed artistically and compare the
effect prodru.ced on t,he eyes after half
an hour's reading.
For this reason hygienists recom-
men& the avoidance of glazed or
highly polished paper in schools. The
paper should be of a grayish or blue-
ish tinge. In any case it should not
be white, and never brilliant.

TREATMENT OF ERYSIPELAS -
1 will not undertake an enumeration
of the. many treatments which have
been proposed for erysipelas, any
more than I will attempt to select the
best dressing for the malady. As
one method came into use the previous
one dropped into oblivion, and suc-
cessively glycerine, boracio and sub-
limate dressings were abandoned. It
will not be. telling enly readers any-
thing new to state that the last int,
portant advance was made with the
aid of serotheraphy. And yet there
are improvements to be made' in the
preparation of anti -erysipelas Serum,
which, in practice, did not eield the
results one ,hatd reason to expect.
Hence it is well to accord a favorable
hearing to treatments whieh experi-
ence appears to sanction and' which
are, at all events, inoffensive,. • This
applies to the following method, which
is proposed by Dr. Schweler.
ploys a mixeuxe of phenic acid and

three p,erts of the latter gives a trans-
parent, oily liquid, colorless at first,
but developing with time a roseate
hue, and having an odor of camphor.
Tbe technique of the process is very
simple. The affeoted parts are paint-
