To THE Enrroa, . OE elt DVO0A.T.D.-
Dear Sir. --Some time ago there ap-
peared in the columns of your -paper
ea item under the heading Vsborne,"
which reflects upon nee, character -and
does tue a gross injustice. I ha.ye dee
layecl writing in the hope that the pro-
fessor of music referred to, who
knows how false and misleading are
the statements then inade,woula write
a contradiction and correction, as we
world not do him the injustice of sup-
pu ite; that the item was in anyway
lesparti by him. This not having been
done I am compelled, reluctantly, to
State the facts in tbe case and leave
your readers to judge if I am, as yonr
correspondent Says, "A man Who has
neither conscience nor principle." The
item referred to is so worded as to pro-
duce the impression that only one
quarter's lessons 'were given and that
for an occasional tea at the close of the
lessons, the whole quarter's pay (viz.
seven dollars) was charged. Now what
are the facts? Five quarterslessoes were
given for which the sum of thirty-five
dollars »was paid, seven dollars for each
quarter, the usual charge, the same
as was being paid bythe neighbors.
On his first visit when the professor
reached our home, it being late in the
afternoon and his horse having stood
Out all afternoon. be was asked to put
in his horse and stay for tea. There-
after this was done as a matter of
course each time, his horse fed hay and
given a gallon of oats; and this was
done not occasionally as your corres-
pondent says, bet. as I most positively
assert, sixty-five times. Let then your
readers judge if a charge of ten cents
for tea and horse feed hay, and oats
was so exorbitant that it should be
spoken of as Yukon prices and as man-
ifesting a spirit which "has neither
conscience nor principle." I hurl back
the charge in the face of your corres-
pondent who knowing the facts, dis-
torted them, or not knowing there,
rushed in his ig,nOrance into print, to
do me an injury. And let me further
assure him that the dext time, who-
ever he may be, he attempts to so
damage my reputation it will net be
throiigh the columns of a paper that
he will" be dealt with. -
