Windermere, Muskok, july 11. -Hon. W. lee Sanford of Bfamilten was drowned yesterday morning while out fishing near his own island, in company with Miss Dowry. It appears that Smeator Sanford found game difficulty in lifting the anchor of his boat, end 'Was about to leave it, when, teeming round, he lost bis balance, upsetting- the boat, precipi- teethes both himself and Miss Dowry into the Water. Miss Dowry caught a lifebell, Which the Senator made a practice of carrying with him, holding herself up, and 'tried to hold the Senator. Losing her hold, the Senator sank and only rose twine. On hearing the cries for help, Miss Knight, a domestic in his •employ, went tq the spot, • and rescuea the lady. 1 ist could see nothing of the Senator. Taking Miss Dowry to shore, about 100 yards, she got her sister and returned. They found the Senator in a standing position, with hiebands placed on a rock, Ids head about 18 inches under water, and about six eeeb from shore. They raised the body and took it to shore, and went to Mr. Baker's, on Flerence for help. AD, the men on the island were away gathering moss for the Senator. Mr, Baker at once rowed to Mr. T. Eaton's. He immediately got out his yacht and came for Dr. Cotton. Dr. Cotton, on arriving, found it, was too late to render any assistance, and his employes had already worked for SOIlle thne trying to resuscitate him, • The Senator's body was supposed not to have been in the Water more than lettlf an hour. Mrs. Sanford and her two daugliters are at present in Germany, and were about to sail for Canada and spend some time at their island. • Mrs. Jackson San- ford and some other friends were visiting the Senator. His yacht bas left for Gravenhurst, where it will 3neefr an embalmer from Toronto. The remains will be taken to Hamilton to -day for burial. The Bead Senator's Career. Hon. 'William Eli Sanford was born in New York eity in 1840. • At the age of 6 ho was an orphan, and came to Hamil- ton, where hie maternal uncle, the late Edward Jackson, then the leading citizen of Hamilton and its most liberal philan- thropist, took care of him and reared him as his own son. His boyhood and school days were spent in the Ambitious City, after which he entered the publish- ing house of Farmer, Bruce & Co., New • York: After residing in New Meek for six years he retwaied to Hansilton, mar- ried his cousin, Miss Jackson, and enter- ed into partnership with Murree', Hender- son & Edward Jackson, in a large foundry business in London, Ont. On the death of his wife, however, widish occurred a few months later, he retired from this venteire and retuened to Hamil- ton and engaged extensively and success- fully in, the wool -braille, and So well known did he become nes, Woolenerchant that he earned the sobriquet of the "Wool King of Canada." In 1861 Mr. Sanford entered into business with Alexander Mc- Innes In the wholesale manufacture of clothing, with a capital of only 820,000. This partnership existed for ten years, When Mr. McInnes withdrew. Mr. San- ford continued as the head of the W. E. Sanford Mannfacburing Comeniny. Mr. Sanford was greatly interested in indus- tries having for their ann the" develop- Inent of Canada's resources. He was one of the projectors and vice-prosidertt of the Manitoba. & Northwestern-Railwa.y Company. ale was an, past -president of the Hamilton° Board of Trade. For years he was vice-president of the Hatoilton Provident Bank. He owned 00,000 acres of arable land near Portage In Prairie, Manitoba, on which he had established a cattle ranch. Apart from business ven- tures, Mr. Sanford was widely known throughout Canada In political, philan- thropic, social and church moles. For years he had. been a staunch supporter of the Conservative party. In 1887 he was Made a Senator. Ile was a near associate of the late Sir John Thotnnson. In 1804 he was in London, and was negotiating a trade treaty with Cecil Rhodes of Cape Colony, when Sir .Tohn Tbompson was stricken dead at Windsor Castle, Be ac- companied the remains home to Canada on H.M.S. Blenheim, and this, together with his attentions to the body of the de- ceased staeesman at Windsor Castle, -espongeseaesera feete mietill prominence.
