PRESRVERX HtriloN. – Th
Presbytery held an adjourned meeting
in Seaforth, on the 28th nib. Th
resignation of Dr: McDonald of hi
pastoral charge of the ,First Presby
terian church,. Seaforth, was taken up
A resolution, passed at a meeting o
the congregation, was read,expressing
their regret at the necessity of this.
step being taken by Dr. McDonald,
owing to the state of his health, teed-
fying to their great esteem for him,
and•ofteriug to give him,. as retiring
allowance, a quarter year's salary, viz.,
•$350. The following commissioners
were heard on behalf of the congrega-
tion :–Messrs Robert Govenlock, W.
Wilson and Colin. Bethune, and D. D.
Wilson on behalf of the session, all tes-
tifying to the regret of the congrega-
tion in parting with their pastor.
Thereafter Dr. McDonald was beard,
reviewing bis connection with the con-
gregation as itspastor for over 20 years.
He was followed by his brethren in the
ministryapresentr all expressing in ap-
preciative terms their high regard fer
Dr. McDonald, and regretting the
great loss which the Presbytery will
sustain in being deprived of his matur-
ed knti wise counsel which
ofteri led to the solving of 'perplexing
questions which now and again present
themselves before ecclesiastical,courts
and wishing- him 'thepresence and
blessing of God where bis lot may be
cast.. The resignation was accepted,
and Mr. Fletcher and the clerk were
appointed to prepare a deliverance
thereon and to report at next meeting.
Mr. Stewart was appointed moderator
of session during the vacancy, and to
declare the pulpit yacant. A deputa-
tion consisting of Messrs. Musgrave,
Fletcher, D. D. Wilson and Fothering-
ham were appointed to visit the con-
grNation of Blake, respecting services
being conducted at Drysdale, at their
eaxliest convenience. The report on
Sabbath schools was read,adopted and
ordered to be transmitted to the con-
venor of the Synods committee.. Dr.

On Thursday, as H. Connolly and
his hired man • were returning from
work in the busInnear Harriston,Ont.,
they noticed an unusual commotion
among the sheep, and on investigation
discovered two immense owls with
their talons firmly embedded in the
wool on the back of a sheep, which
they were endeavoring to carry away.
Mr.Ponnolly and his man immediately
dispatched one of the invadors and
captured the other alive. It is a very
unusual thing to bear of owls trying
to carry off so large an animal as a
sheep, and the only theory for their
attempt to do so so, is that of extretne
hunger. The largest °be measured six
feet fool tip to tip of its wings, and
the other four feet, two inches.
The estimated expenditures of some
great general advertisers is given as
follows by an authority : Hood's Sar-
saparilla $750,000, Ayer's Sarsaparilla
$600,000, Royal Baking Powder $500,,
000, Sepolio $400,000, Pyle's Pearline
$300,000, Baker's Cocoa $250,000,
Sozodont $200,000, Cleveland's Baking
Powder $200,000, Castoria, $200,000,
dalifornia Fig Syrup $200,000. It is
noteworthy that some of the riloat
persistant advertisers are the old
-
established firing-, The plea sometimes
urged by local merchants who do not
advertise., that it would not do them
any good to advertise because every
one knows them already, has no effect
apparently on those old fellows who
spend their htindreds of thousands in
printers' ink every year. "
