DEATH On' JOSEPH ANDERSON. -An
old a,nd highly respected resident of
this village and the township of Ste-
phen, died on Wednesday of this
week at the residence of his son
Crediton road, where he had
been visiting the past four weeks. For
some time deceased had been in failing
health, and suffered intensely from the
effects, of general debility, heart failure
being the ultimate cause of death.
Mr. Anderson was born near Belfast,
Ireland, and with his parents emigrat-
ed to this country when five years of
age. • They settled in Grenville,
,Quebec, where they lived for some
years. At the age of 30 years he came
to the Huron tract, and settled on lot
10, con. 2, Stephen township, the farm
on ivhich he died. Shortly after-
wards he left for the Gulf of Mexico,
returning in 1841, when he married
Jane Diamond, Also of Stephen, at the
residence occupied by Mr. Floyd, of
Exeter, then the Diamond estate.
After his marriage he settled on, the
farmandby dent of industry and good
management, hewed opt a, comfortable
home, and succeeded with many years
toil in accumulating a goodly share of
this world s goods. His wife died in
1867. In the . year 1871 • he monied
widow Bicknell, of ,Centralia. The
same year he retired ' from farming
and- came to this village to reside,
During the past twenty years deceased
has travelled eXtensivelf, ' and his
knowledge of the various parts of Can-
ada being so replete,' it -was a treat for
anyone to engage him in conversation.
He was also a meat reader and well
versed in all subjects. By. the first
wife there werenine children, all liv-
ing, as ,followia-Mrs. P. Trainer,
St. Joseph's Island; Mrs. A. E.
Adams Luddington, Mich.; Mrs.
Joseph Hudson, Mun wing, Mich.; Mrs.
J. A. Graham, London.; Miss Ander-
eon, Munising, Mich.; William Ander-
son, on the homestead in Steithen ;
Wilson, at Crediton; John. hear Bay
City, Mich.; Joseph, Chicago. ' By the
second wife, who survives him, there
were three children, one son and. two
daughters. The daughters live at
home while Frank is at Frederickton,
enlisted in the Canadian army, Mr.
Anderson was highly respected by a
large circle of 'friends, and his death
will be universally regretted. Ho had
been a member of the Methodist
ehureh for tepwords of 40 years. His
remains will be intertei in the Fair-
field cemetery on Friday at 2 o'clock

regret to announce the death of Mrs.
James Gilchrist (nee Miss Annie Mc-
Arthur, youngest daughter of the late
Robt. McArthur), which sad event oc-
curred at her home in this village on
Monday morning last,. Mrs. Gilchrist
was in the very prime of life, being
only 32 years of ageeana her death is a
wed blow to her loving hushand,as well
as to her many relatives and friends,
by whore she was greatly beloved.
She leaves an in.asint elanghter only 10
days old. The,:funearl sermon was
held irk Carmenehurch, on Wednesday
morning last, and was Very largely at-
tended, as was else the cortege to the
Rodgerville cemetery,testifying to the
esteem in which deceased was held and
respect shown to the bereaved hus-
band.

Rev. Acheson, of Kippen, and Rev.
Henderson, town, exchanged pulpits
on Sunday lasts -The ball given by the
Curling Club, in McOloys hall, on Fri-
day evening last, was a success.
Notwithstanding the cold weather, the
attendance was large. --A number of
villagers attended the complementary
supper given Mr. R. Clegg; the G.
R. agent at Kippen, by the citizens
of that berg, on Friday evening. Ie
was tendered him as dmark of esteem,
and was pronounced a, most enjoyable
and successful affair in every respect.
Our Kippen friends never do things by
halves. and the President of this ban-
quet, R.,1Vfeitiordie, and the secretary,
Mr. Balfour, as well as the committee
of management are to be congratulat
ed on the great success that, attended
their efforts. Mr. Clegghas been agent
at Kippen for the past thirteen years,
his kindly disposition and obliging
manner has so endeared him with the
community that they felt it would be
a most pleasant ayent to have Mr. and
.Mrs.- Clegg and their many friends
come together in this manner, as also
testify to the esteem in which he is held
by all. -.The Misses Hagan spent Sab-
bath and the fitst 'part of thireweek

Rev. W. E. Kerr again preached an-

little too pronounced and severe, hut
the subject otherwise was very ably

as a geed cheese maker, was in town

ness here if he could get a good open-
ing. -Mrs. J. Macarthue has returned
from visiting friends in Loodon.-The
skating and marling rink has been so
liberally patronized this winter, that
the proprietors anticipate enlarging

Cousins, who died at her home in the
north ward on Tuesday, took place
from the family residence, Thursday.
Services were conducted by Rev. Mr.
Taylor. Deceased was in her 73rd
yeanand was well known. in St. Marys.

and sudden bereavement. -Joe Galles,

ber of farmers met at Centralia Town
Hall for the purpose of organizing a
joint stock company to be known as
the Centralia Creamery Association,
for the manufacture of hitter in Cen-
tralia. There were 104 shares, at $10
a share sold. The officers elected for

event occurred on Monday, when
the young wife of Mr, Sidney
Andrew, after a few hours suffering
from convulsions, passed from this
stage of action. It is all the more
sad as she was comparatively a
stranger here, as her home was in
Michigan and was only married and
came here with her husband on the ist
of June, 1898. The bereaved husband
has the sincere sympathy of the whole
community in this his sad bereave-
ment. -Mr. Thomas Swale, our re-

wife of the late Alex. Cameron of
Stanley, passed to her rest, at the age
of 93 years, and on the 14th inst.,
James Whiteman, of this villancejetn-
ed the silent majoritysat tbe age of 90
years. Both had been 111 for some
time. They each leave a,family,grown
up and well-to-do.
COMPLIMENTARY Suanzna-One of
the most pleasant gatheringsever
assembled here was that of Friday
evening last, wlien° some 200 friends of
Station- master Clegg came through
the cold to do him ,honor. The occas -
tion was a. complimentary supper,
tendered Mr. Clegg by the Citizens of
Kippen and vicinity, as a token'of re-
spect and esteem,and as an evidence of
their appreciation of his geniality and
obliging ways during the past thirteen
years of his residence here in the
capacity of station agent. A most
sumptuous repast was served, while
ithe toast list was one of the finest ever
listened to.

great admirer of fancy ,horse -flesh, has
urchased from the Messrs. Thompson
Brothers, of the London road,a driver,
which for quality, style and speed is
pretty hard to beat. -The Methodists
of this place have completed all ar-

church in our village, which will be of
the latest design. They are now ask-

death of Wm. Thompson, sr...who died

BRIEFS. --John Shepherd Intends mov-
ing to Hensall shortly. --The recent

wood. -After a prolonged illness -of
St. Vitus Dance. ;Samuel T, Perkin
died on Monday last, at the age of 38
years; 11 months. The direct cause of
death being blood -poisoning. De-
ceased has been a resident of the vil-
lage for a number of years, and before
his affliction carried on a ,successful
boot & shoe business here, being one
of the finest workmen in the county.
He was a former resident of Exeter
and Zurich, and was highly respected
by a large circle of friends. He was a
member of the BensaIl Court of the
Canadian Order of "Foresters, under
the rites of which Order his remains
were interred in McTaggart's cemetery
on Wednesday afternoon. -A. -widow
and two sons survive him. Mrs. John
Daldwill, of Tuckersrnith, underwent
a critical operatiou on Monday. Sbe
was taken suddenly ill with inflam-
mation of the bowels, and so serious
was her condition that had the opera-
tion not been performed when it was
death would have resulted in a few
hours. The bowels were examined
and a congested portion removed', and
at last reports the patient Was doing
as well as could be expeNt ed. There
