Northumberland, Halton, • Nipissime
West York, and South Perth, while

last twenty years. It is but fair to
assume that the Liberals having the
resources of two Governments at their
back had most money to spend in
bribery. The election law is a farce,
and politics iu Ontario must necessarily
go from bad to worse unless strong
and. honest men rise inside each party
to suppress this tendency to attract
"floaters" with whiskey and thouey.
WEST HURON. -
The Liberals of West Huron were
called together Friday to nominate
cauclidates to contest bye -elections for
both the Local and Dominion Houses.
J. T. Garrow, q. C., the late member,
was unanimously nominated for the
former and. Mr. Robert Holmes, for
the latter. Mr. Holmes is a son of n.
Hohnes, formerly Assistant Provincial
Librarian, now of St.Catherines,where
Mr. Holmes was born 45 Tears ago.
Mr. Holme's father purchased theOlin-
ton New Era ha 1855.
Mr. Garrow had been spoken of as
a candidate for the Dominion •Hottse.

Henry Kneisel, a farmer living near
Gadshill, met with a very painful and
a most unusual accident on Monday.
He was taking a cow into Stratford
and had reached the railway crossing
on the Morn ington road, when he es-
sayed to hit the animal with the rope
• by winch he was leading her. In some
manner the end of the rope flew
around and struck the unfortunate
man in the left eye, , completely de-
stroying the sight.
It is with regret we announce the
sudden death of a former resident and
husinessanan of St. Marys, in the per-
son .of Robert Reicisof Ridgeway. The
cause betegepopley. Mr. Reid came
here from Galt in the year 1875 and
with his brother-in-law, Mr. Wood,
parcbasecl a foundry then .owned by
Peter Hageseet. Mr. Wood:died a few
years late t and. the business was then
carried on by Mr. Reid himself. He
remained in the BLone Town till 1893,
when his building was burned down.
Shortly after he removed his ft -tinily to
Ridgeway, littving secured a situation
as engineer in Butler's flonr mill and
has resided there ever since,

By the original agreement between the
town and this firm, the latter obtained
epon certain conditions a $30,000 bonus
to remove their agricultural works
from Paris to St. Marys for a period •
of 10 years, and it therefore expires
on the 31st of December, 1808. The
council have decided to ask the firm
to -pay 4 per ceiat interest on the un-
paid balance of the bonus, amounting
to $12,000, until the amount of such
balance is paid off, the plan of pay-
ment being that arranged in the origi-
nal agreetnent.

justice McLennan, on appeal. After
argnment their Lordships announced
that they had decided that the election
should be voided because of it not hav-
ing been a fair one owing to the mis-
printed ballots. They attached no cen-
sine to anyone for the occm‘rence.
The counter petition was then taken
up and several cases of bribery testi-
fied to in Mr. Monteith's behalf, the
money for which it was alleged, was
furnished by Mr. Graham .of St.
Mary's, secretary of the Conservative
Association. Wm. Tobin, a bartender
of St. Mary's, acknowledged having
paid out various sums to voters, which
he said was furnished by Graham.
This Graham denied .on oath. The
eudges decided that no corrupt prac-
tices had. been proved on the part of
the Conservative candidate, het diet
the votes of those who bad 'received
bribes should be tnrown out.

by the striking off of four of his sup
porters, the seat should go to Mr. Mon-
teith, It was therefore arranged to
carry the case to the Court, of Appeate

brother, George j. Fawcett. The lat-
ter was the picture of health, and re-
membering that when be came from
Detroit, where he bad been livieg. for

the homestead, he was in sech feeble
health that his life was despaired of,
