One of the fiercest and most peculiar
electric storms seen in years pass-
ed over Markham on Sunday. Only
once in eight weeks has ram fallen
there,and everything was parched. At
about 4,30 the storm broke in all its
;fury, and fol five hours the rain came
down in torreu ts, accompanied at times
with hail as big as robins' eggs. The
lightning was incessant, accompanied
by terrific peals of thunder. For about
an hour there was a continual roar of
thunder, tbe noise never ceasing for
an instant. The lightning played
1111.VOC around town, striking a number-
iof places. The observatory on Mrs.
Burk's residencewas struck and badly
shattered;tbe chin= eron Mr.Thornes'
house,forty feet away,was also struck.
The residence a Dr. E. T. Lovvle was

Back faorn Klondike.
Albert schoftela, who left Port Huron
February 23th of last year for the
Klondike gold fields, has returned
home disgusted with the country. He
has passed through terrible ordeals,
and says there is not enough money in
the entire Klondike district to indtice
binato go through the same experience
,again. Schofield says that there
as but little opportunity for prospec-
• tbrs for gold striking a rich claim, and
during his stay in the gold regions be
turned his attention to building boats,
and also piloted (31 boats through the
rapids. He made $1,700 at this wort,
and then decided to quite and return
home, selling his stock of provisions
for 75 cents per pound. Mr. Scho-
field asserts that there is no chance to
embark in business at Dawson City
without paying the Canadian Govern -
anent a 40 per cent. license fee ; also
• that all good claims within a hundred
tallies of Dawson City are taken, atici if
any new oees are located and prove
rich they are inauipulated to the ad-
vantage of the 'Government Gold Cora-
missioner, The v.ast majority of the
prospectors there, he believes, will re-
turn sorely disappointed. Schofield left
Dawson City July 12th, and he says at
that time 40,000 knee were therentany
'a them without a cent, to thole nette.

Diamond
Dyes.
In scores.of small country towns and
villages in Canada- enterprising men
anct women are adding to their yearly
income by the work of dyeing for
friends and neighbors around them
who have not the time to do the work
themselves.
These town and village dyers with-
out exception use the Dia.nnoncl Dyes
in preference to all other, because they
give the most brilliant, pure unfsding
colors to all varieties of materials.
Hundreds of orders from these coun-
try dyers are filled every week by the
manufacturers of Diamond Dyes. There
are great possibilities for such work in
all small parishes, and the statements
sust made may influence many who
are seeking for a plan to increase their
revenue. Their are good dollars in
Diamond. Dyes.

To Advertisers.
The benefit derived from an adver-
tisement depends altogether upon the
numlaer of persons whd read. it. To
reach the greatest number of readers
at the least possible expense, is a
question that should be considered
very carefully by business men. A
thousand small bills printed in Tor-
onto or London, and distributed in
this section, would be just as effective
as if the bill had been printed in town.
There is nota doubt about that, but if
you want to reach the people in their
homes, newspeper advertising is the
only successful ways To get the best
results use the paper -with the largest
circulation, and thegreatest amount of
local news. Circulation is the proper
basis -upon whichpricesshouldbefixed.
If a newspaper -with a circulation of
2,000 charges $100 per year, then one
with a circulation of600 would be entitl-
ed to $80. An advertiser should take
these facts into careful eonsideration,
when nraking contracts. Anothe± fre-
quent loss to Advertisers is in the use
• of several papers -vvhen one covers the
ground. Tan TIMEs is readby more
people in Exeter, Usborne, Stephen,
Hay, the northern parasof Biddulph
and McGillivray than all other county
papers combined, and an advertise-
ment placed in it Is ill be found the
most effectual way iu which to reach
the people.
