On Thursday last, the British iron
ship Cromartyshire had her bow torn
away by collision sixty miles south of
Sable Island with the French steamer
La Bourgogne, which went dawn ten
minutes later. Of the six hundred
passengers and crew on board only
two hundred were saved. One woman
was saved by bee husband. The cap-
tain and other deck of6.cers went down
with the ship. The Cramartyshire

CAT.. HENDERSON'S STORY.

Islandeship by wind on the port tack
heading about W.N. W.; though under
reduced. canvas, going about 4 or 5
knots per hourso-ur fog horn was being
kept going regularly every minute. At
that time heard a steamer's whistle on
the weather side or port beam, which
seemed to be nearing very fast. We
blewhorn anclwere aisswered by steam-
er's whistle. All of a seddenshe loom-
ed through fog on one port bow and
i
crashed. nto us at a terrific.speed. Our
foretop mast and main -top -gallant
mast came down, bringing -with it
yards and everythirg attached. I
Immediately orclered the boats out,
and went to examine the damage.
I found that our boats were complete-
ly cut off, arid the plates twisted into
every conceivable shape. The other
ship disappeared through the fog.
However, our ship was floating and,
kept going ahead, •so there seemecl no
iromecliate danger of her sinking.
We heard a steasner blowing her
whistle, a,ncl we anewerecl with our fog
horn. The steamer then threw em a
rocket and fired a shot. We also threw
up some rockets,andfiredseveral shots
but we neither saw nor heard any
more of the steamer. Shortly after
or about 5.80 a. na, the fog lifted
somewhat, and we saw the tioats
pulling towards as with, the French
flag flying. We signalled them to. come
alongside and found. that the steamer
was the La Bourgogne, fkorn New
York to Havre, and. that she had. gone
down. We laicl to all clay, and re -
calved on board about 200 survivors
from amongst the .passengers and
crew, reported. to be in all about 600.
it was a terrible scene. No pen .can
picture the appalling sight unveiled to
the onlookers when the curtain. of
mist arose. The work of rescue was
commenced without a moment's delay,
and over 200 were picked up and taken
on board. the ship. Mrs. Henderson,
had. ample opportunity of interxiew-
ing those who were aescued expressed
her belief from what she had heard
that the) e had been po effort to save
the women. There were many foreign-
ers on board., who fought for places
in the boats.
