Three of them had been taken from a tree where no spraying hadbeeu done. 'They were all small, deformed and seriously affected with those black spots that are the ruin of so ranch fruit. On the other hand the three taken from the sprayed trees were fully twice as large and were healthy and well shaped and free from all fund i fungi, with :every 'appearance of de- veloping into perfect fruit. The sam- ples were all of the Northern Spy variety, and were ,sprayed, six times. THE EXET' ER TIMES DAIreci v N. Loot„ TO Yana ORCHARD, -A Toron- to despatch, of Monday last said : In- spector Orr, of Fruitlauds, Ont., who has been investigating the fruit or- chards of the province with a view to ascertaining the ravages of the San - Jose scale, reported to the Minister of Agriculture this morning that the state of affairs is much more serious than was at first believed. The pest has obtained so strong a foothold in the province that ordinary measures for stamping it out will be unavailing. Mr. Orr reports that the parasite is to be found in orchards all along the fruit belt of southern Ontario, between Chatham and Niagara. It attacks all varieties of frdit trees and forest trees rs well. The state of affairs is growing the more serious since in addition to Muslins. attacking the bark and;gradeally kill- ing the tree, the sale also attacks the fruit. Mr. Orr had specimens of green pimps which the found to be covered with the invisible lice that are brought forth by the scale. It is a curious fact that whether attacking the bark or the Prints, fruit itself the scale produces a pur- plish flush at the spots where the vis- ible scales are deposited. The appear- ance on fruit so attacked is that of an angry scrofulous sore. It is feared that infected fruit will be offered for sale this summer. r R. PICKARD CO., _4. The Seaforth Sun referring to the ;recent match in Exeter with the 1 Seaforth Beavers, says :-"The game throughout was exceptionally nice and wasnot, marred hy any un- due roughness or unfair playing. Exeter has the making of a very strong team and with more practice will be able to compete with the best players. The boys from here were very much pleased with their reception in Exeter and in all ways the game was quite successful. DAsnwoo1) Mm. -When we learn of rural sections, already well supplied, being granted further mail facilites, and two important villages like Exeter and Dashwood being deprived of a most valuable mail route, viz: the daily. service from Exeter to Dashwood sug- gests the thought that, these two;pl aces - being Conservative strongholds, the Liberal Government have no desire to gratify the wishes of the hundreds of persons who petition- ed to have the service continued. A Mail via Exeter to Dashwood, is im- portant the business interestsf o ortaaht to Dashwood, and a convenience to the citizens of Exeter and the people along the route. While the old route is thus abandoned, new contracts have been made to supply Hay P. 0. from the Exeter depot, and Sare to from Dash- d c, S ib o at an expense ,1 lrtl less than wood, the cost of the cancelled. service, which formerly supplied these two interven- ing offices. The saving in expense to the post office department by the change is not, worth considering in comparison to the inconvenience and delay in receiving mail matter, sus- tained by Exeter and Dashwood; and if the postal service of Canada is calculat eel to promote business by rapid trans- mission of mail matter, then justice demands that the old service be again established at an early date. So im- portant is it to the people of Dashwood, they would rather lose the Parkhill service, as London being their princi- pal trading point, •the route via Exeter is quicker by a day. This matter should be pressed and tbeGovernment urged to go back to the old order. EXETER ELECTRIC LICauIT 00.-•A Joint Stock Cetepany with a capital of $10,000 has been organized in Exeter to operate a system of electric light- ing. Lutz ; Manager, R. C. C. Trexnaine, B. A. Sc.; Directors, E. J. Spackman, B. S. O'Neil, and Frank Wood. Amongst the stock holders. are :-D. Johns, W. Bawden, R. 5. Lang, H. Bishop, R. H. Collins and others The company have obtained -a franchise from the town to erect poles, and a contract to a light the back streets. Altogether the company will start with about 000 incandescent lights. An idea can be formed of the popularity of the scheme from the fact that the stock list was closed at the second meeting of the Board. We understand that the company intend sparing no effort to give a satisfactory service to the whole village, especially in the matter of the illuhnivation of the back streets -a long felt want. They also intend giv- ing a late service till one or two o'clock a. m., and during the winter months an early service from 5 till 8 o'clock a. in, This latter arran- gementwill be an especialincoyenieiice to the village at large. Piarties who intend installing the service should do so at the earliest inconvenience, as the company will have a large number of. lights in .land, and wish to have them upb y the time e wired.m the. plant It is in operatioby information can be obtained from the Manager, R. DIRECT IIPOTERSI Clvxc HOLIDAX.-To-day (Th ursday) is Exeter's civic holiday, although it is expected that most business places will be open, on account of insufficient notice having been given of the pro- clamation. A civi:; holiday should be well advertised •a announced , ncl su 'ffic .- ently far in advance to post the farm- ing community, that they might gov- ern themselves accordingly. This year we doubt if any farmers know of the holiday, and yesterday having been wet, they will likely swarm into town to dap for business. It is a mis- take, and in the interests of business,in future good and sufficient announce- ment should be made. The procla- mation itself is so small that one has to hunt for it, instead of its command- ing attention. Percy Westaway is visiting friends in Hensall. Care sick headache. To Advertisers. 1 The benefit derived from an adver- tisement depends altogether upon the number of persons who read it. To reach the greatest number of readers ' at the least possible expense, is a. question that should bt' considered very carefully by business ashen. A thousand small bilis printed in Tor- ' onto or London, and distributed in this section, would be just as effective as if the hill had been print, d in town. !There is not a doubt about that, but if you want to reach the people in their homes, newspaper advertising is the only successful way. To get the best results use the paper with the largest ' circulation, and. thegreatest aamountof local news. Circulation is the proper: basis upon whichprieesshouid be fixed. If a newspaper with a circulation of 2,000 charges $10() per year, then one with&circulation of600 would be entitl- ed to $80. An advertiser should take these filets into careful consideration, when making contracts. .Another fre- quent loss to advertisers is in the use of several papers when one covers the ground. THE TIME is read by more people. in Exeter, trsborne, Stephen, Hay, the northern part, of Biddulph and McGillivray than all other county papers combined, and an advertise- ment placed in it uh ill be runnel the most effectnal way in which to reach the people. To be free from sick headache, bil- iousness, constipatinlf, etc., use Car- ter's Little Liver Pills. Strictly veg- etable. They gen.(ly stimulate the liver and free the stomach from bile.
