YIELDS TO THE WILL OF THE COM-

130 AecePls the Strategic Frontier, nut
Makes some Iteseevatiosie — Opposition
fi'utu the War Party Inevitable.
A despatch from Consl.antinople says
t Minis-
ter, the Foreign communicated to Baron von Cal -
lee, this Austrian Ambassador, an
irade isstbed by the Sultan authorizing
the Porte to acoept the frontier agreed
upon by the military attaches of the
foreign Embassies.
Other despatches from Constanti'
noels confirm the, report tint the Sul-
tan has finally conceded the demands
o£ the powers in regard to a strategio
frontier, His excuse all along has been
that the opposition of the Grants Vi-
zier and the war party prevented him)
from acguiesoing i:n the wishes of the
powers.
Now that this is overcome, thepeuce
negotiations should logi:ally continue
smoothly until the fipal terms are
settled.. Nevertheless nobody believes
that they will.
There is too good reason to believe
that every debatable detail connected
with the evacuation of Thessaly and
the settlement of the Cretan question
will .be contested with the same
obstinacy and obstruction as has
characterized the negotiations kith-
erto.
The familiar contention that it is the
inviolable principle of !slam not to
abandon territory conquered by the
sword, is being again emphasized, and
it would not be surprising to learn
shortly that Abdul Hamid, fearing to
arouse the efussuiman spirit, is unable;
to order the retreat of the victorious
army.
Stories are already industriously cir-
culated by threats against his Ma-
jesty's lite, the latest having been
found in an open letter on a desk in
his study. The letter concludes:-
"You shall not withdraw from
Thessaly, lettering the bones and tombs
of our. Moslem forefathers to unbe-
lievers."
