members sustained more or less severe
injury to their hands and arms.
NEW COACHES.—It is the intention
of theG. T. R. to introduce a new type
of passenger coach. on all their divi-
sions. Several of theta have already
been completed and contain the new
feature of a smoking room built after
the fashion of those in the Pullman
CM'S. The G. T. R. will, in all prob-
ability, slake many improvements in
the equipment of their rolling stock
during the next few years, this being
one of the points of policy of the new
management.
PROPERTY GiuosGES.—F. J. Knight
has purchased from J. 11. Grieve, the
Southcott block on the corner of Main
and John Streets, paying therefor
$2,300 part of the consideration being
Mr. Knight's cottage at the old mar-
ket, which Me. Grieve bas since sold
to F. Wood for $900. Mr. Grieve has
purchased I. Andrew's cottage, on
William street. Mr, Knight will
move his liquor and grocery stock to
his new premises, while Mr. Grieve
will go back to Mr. Senior's black with
his stock of tweeds and gents' fur-
nishings.
FARMER'S' INSTITUTES.—The annual
meeting of each Farmer's Institute in
the Province of Ontario will be held
this year on Tuesday, June 1, commen-
cing at 1.p. in, in eswh of the respective
districts, The program will be as fol-
ows : (1) President's report; (2) discus-
sion thereon ; (3) report of the execu-
tive presented in writing by the secre-
tary ; (4) Treasurer's report presented

THE TELEPHONE RATES. --Toronto
city council are sending out petitions
for signature, addressed to the Gover-
nor in council, against permission
beinggranted the BellTelephotae Coin-
panto increase their rates. The
petitions ask that enquiry by a co m-
missioner be made.
(1) Into the telephone business and
the cost thereof; and what prices paid
by sl'ibscribers, will give a reasonsa.ble
profit ou money invested therein.
(2) Into the charges, profits and
expenses, and into the correctness of
the financial and other statements of
the Bell Telephone Company.

police are on the lookout fora utan and
woman who collected a considerable
slum of stoney last week from farmers
living around Embro station. They
had a letter relating the pathetic his-
tory of a widow of North Ernhro with
theusualcompleuient of small children.
Appended to this letter was a list of
Embro citizens who had never been
seen in Embro. One document they
carried led to their being found out.
It was a letter purported to be from
Dr. Ross commending them to the
charitably disposed. A lady living on
the Governor's road was acquainted
with the doctor's handwriting, and
thinking all was not right warned the
police.

FENCE.—E. Hawke, general agent for
the Anchor Wire Fence Co., of Strat-
ford,
who has been in this section for
a few weeks, has succeeded in dispos-
ing of a large quantity of this celebrat-
ed fence. Among those who have
purchased this fence are :—Coates
Bros., Usborne, over 100 rods ; Robert
Oreery, Usborne, 75 rods; besides
many others whose fences have not
been erected, owing to the capacity
of the factory being overtaxed in fill-
ing, previous orders. The building
committee of the Evangelical church,
Orediton, inspected an : ornamental
fence erected around the Thames
Road manse, and without any hesitat-
ion gave an . order for three hundred
and fifty feet to be erected around the
church. The names of others who
have built the ornamental fence in

FIRE.—The fire alarm sounded on
Tuesday night about 11 o'clock, and
Brought the populace to a building
north of the Salable bridge, owned
by Digory Breland, which was very
badly damaged before the alarm was
given. The fire companies were soon
at hand and in a short time stayed
the progress of she flames. The
building was occupied by Mr. Ismore,
who had moved to Stratford, but left
part of the furniture in the house. The
furniture was all safely removed. The
fire was started in the woodshett and
was first noticed by T. Webster, who
at once gave. the alarm. The build-
ing was badly damaged inside, and •
there was no insurance on it.
Mrs. Samuel Madge, of Usborne has
been visiting relations in Clinton.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Johnson. of
Zurich, spent Tuesday in the village.

days with queries about the municipal
grant, it having been abolished during
the 1890 session of the Ontario Leggis-
latnre. Instead `thereof, township
councils . were authorized to increase

Wool is likely to be a good price this
season. All of last year's clip is sold
and the United States Tariff will not,
likely go into effect until August, so
this will enable a large part of this
clip to be sold before the larger tariff
comes into force.
If the celebration of Her Majesty's
birthday in Exeter this year is not a
success, it will be the fault of the
weather ; and if any one predicts fine
weather and carries an umbrella until
the day arrives, this hu portant re-
quisite toils success will probably not
be found absent.
The bicycle club run to Hensall on
Monday evening was not as largely at-
tended as was expected, owing to
counter attractions zu town. The run,
however, was a pleasant one., though
the roads were somewhat rough. They
arrived in good time, where they
spent a few minutes, returning hone
about nine o'clock. Several of the
Hensen bicyclists met them halfway
and escorted the club into the village.
The finale portion of,the club will pro-
bably make another run to Hensall on
Friday evening, in greater force.
