WEATHER AND CROPS. The meteorlogical authorities in this province, in their report for May,. make a revelation that will surprise many. They say that though the Weather during the month through- out Ontario was cloudy, cool and gloomy, the temperature was average in many districts, and in no case does the mean show more than 3 degrees below. This disagreement between the actual facts and the observer's feel- ings is doubtless owing to the very large amount of cloud and the small range of temperature between the day and night hours. There was several light but "killing" frosts in the eastern portion of the province, and one on the night of the 21st in the Western portion, where young potatoes and other delicate plants were in many instances completely destroyed. Excepting :in Eastern Ontario, where spring grain is very backward and fall wheat in poor con- dition, the opinion prevails that all crops are doing remarkably well. Spring wheat and other grain crops are rather backward, but are extremely healthy, and the hay crop promises to be enormous. The quantity, of blos- soms upon nearlyl all fruit trees is very large. Seeding in northern and northwestern districts was much de- layed owing to unusually wet weather. This is so far satisfactory, but June grumblers will have to improve, or the 'will have their opportunity. ead, ''• Monday was the sixth anniversary of Sir John A. Macdonald's death. At the emigration hall, Winni e_, 2,842 emigrants were registered last month. It is reported that the Pelee Island peach crop is a failure, as well as on the mainland. The Council of the London Board of Trade has passed a resolution opposing the Bell Telephone Company's applica- tion to the Government forpermission to increase their rates. John Milne, aged 30, assistant en- gineer at the American Rattan Works Toronto, while assisting in cleaning out the boiler Sunday morning, was probably fatally scalded. A very sad accident happened at the American end of the St. Clair tunnel Tuesday morning, by which Daniel Gillies, a tunnel brakeman, who re- sides in Sarnia, was terribly mangled. Samuel Kitchen, an ex -policeman, of Battlefard, N. W. T., is dead. He fell through a hay rack about a year ago receiving an injury to one of his knees, which utimately resnited in his death. The livery stable of H, Cook, ; Kin- cardine, owned by F. Sellery, was burned on Thursday. Six horses and a. number of rigs were destroyed. In- surance on building, $200; on contents, $1,100. The Mayor of Kingston, Ont., on Monday night wrote to those con- ductinga ferriscope exhibition of the Corbett -Fitzsimmons fight threaten- ing proceedings if the show was given Tuesday night. BEST FEED MOST PROFIT. The Canadian Packing Company has added its testimony to that of other packers throughout the country against any attempt on the part of the farmers to change the feed of their pigs from a mixed diet, chiefly composed of peas and barley, to one of cora. We believe that the large Majority of bog raisers would not for a moment think of disregarding the is well but it t advice of the packers, for anyone Who may be tempted to do'. so to understand that it would be a losing speculation. Solely by the method of feeding adopted in Canada, combined with the skilful cutting of the meat and the careful process of preparation for market, our farmers and packers have secured a reputation for Canadian bacon in Great Britain which enables the producer to pocket 2 cents per pounds live weight, off the cars. more than has been paid in Chicago for fatty, corn -fed pork. As a matter of fact, we learn from a London, England, correspondent, Can- adian is the finest bacon on the mar- ket today in point of quality, admitted- ly superior to Danish, while the gulf between it and the United States is shown by prices, which are from >s to 12s in favor of the Dominion product. -- • -. _- - NOTES AND COMMENTS A resolution of l'. S. Congressman Hill calls for a commission of three to meet a like commission from Can- ada to consider mutual commercial relations. The opportunity is past, however, for such conference to be of much practical result. Canada has made all the overture of this kind that she will be disposed to make for• a long time to come. The last step in that direction, wade in so undiplo- matic a fashion by Messrs. Laurier and Cartwright, was met by the Ding- ley tariff wall, and there has been a rebound toward Great Britain in a still more undiplomatic way, with an equally humiliating and confusing re- bound from the German and Belgian treaties. The net result will be that Canada will rest upon her own tariff without preference extended to any other nation unless preference is re- turned, upon .wh ich basis the powers that be will have all they' can do to make the reviuue fit the yearly ex- penditure. As pointed out by the London Times, which seems to under- stand the situation now better than formerly. "Canada stands midway upon an Imperial high road, where she may . regard with relative indif- ference the fence erected- on the southern frontier." x x t Premier Hardy • and Hon. Messrs.
